Sinossi

'The Art in Ancient Egypt,' edited by Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez, presents a comprehensive exploration of Egyptian art forms, from grandiose architectural feats to intricate artifact designs, encapsulating the profound spiritual and daily significance art held in ancient Egyptian life. The anthology spans a diverse spectrum of literary styles, combining detailed archaeological study, interpretative essays, and visual analyses to offer a multidimensional perspective on its subject matter. This range allows for a richly textured understanding of both the aesthetic quality and functional purposes of Egyptian art within its historical and cultural contexts. The editors, both revered in the field of archaeology and art history, bring together a wealth of research that crosses geographical boundaries and academic disciplines. Their collaboration reflects a synthesis of French scholarly tradition and a broader European intellectual curiosity about Egyptology during the late 19th century, a period keen on exploring historical connections through the lens of art and architecture. The collection not only aligns with historical and cultural movements but also mirrors the contemporaneous fascination with Egypt's ancient civilization, providing a critical foundation for modern interpretations and appreciations of this rich artistic heritage. Ideal for enthusiasts of history and art alike, 'The Art in Ancient Egypt' offers readers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the complexities of Egyptian artistic endeavors. The volume encourages a deeper appreciation for the confluence of aesthetics, functionality, and symbolism in ancient artistic expressions. In turns beloved and reviled, twentieth century art, painter, filmmaker, and designer Salvador Dalí set Europe and the United States ablaze with his uncompromising genius, sexual sadism, and flirtations with megalomania. His shocking behavior and work frequently alienated critics; his views were so outrageous, even prominent Surrealists tried to ostracize him. Still, every morning he experienced "an exquisite joy—the joy of being Salvador Dalí," and, through a remarkable talent that invited bewilderment, anger, and adoration, rose to unprecedented levels of fame—forever shifting the landscape of the art world and the nature of celebrity itself.

In this stunning volume, noted art historians Jean-Pierre Isbouts and Christopher Heath Brown discuss the historical, social, and political conditions that shaped Dalí's work, identify the impact of Modern as well as Old Master art, and present an unflinching view of the master's personal relationships and motivations. With their deeply compelling narrative, Isbouts and Brown uncover how Dalí's visual wit and enduring cult of personality still impacts fashion, literature, and art, from Andy Warhol to Lady Gaga, and seeks to answer why, in an age of shock and awe, Dalí's art still manages to distress, perplex, and entertain.

In Heavyweight, Jordana Moore Saggese examines images of Black heavyweight boxers to map the visual terrain of racist ideology in the United States, paying particular attention to the intersecting discourses of Blackness, masculinity, and sport. Looking closely at the "shadow archive" of portrayals across fine art, vernacular imagery, and public media at the turn of the twentieth century, she demonstrates how the images of boxers reveal the racist stereotypes implicit in them, many of which continue to structure ideas of Black men today. With a focus on both anonymous fighters and notorious champions, including Jack Johnson, Saggese contends that popular images of these men provided white spectators a way to render themselves experts on Blackness and Black masculinity. These images became the blueprint for white conceptions of the Black male body—existing between fear and fantasy, simultaneously an object of desire and an instrument of violence. Reframing boxing as yet another way whiteness establishes the violent mythology of its supremacy, Saggese highlights the role of imagery in normalizing a culture of anti-Blackness.

1974 was a busy year for Mel Brooks. Although still recovering after a series of failed projects threatened his career, he pulled off a one-two punch that saw the release of two of the most beloved American comedies ever made: Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Although both films are well-known, the stories beyond the making of each movie are less so. How did they come to be, and how did the era's culture and politics not only permit them to be made, but help them to become enduring comedy classics?

With their riotous parodies of Westerns and classic horror movies, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were not only hilarious. They played with charged social and cultural themes in an inimitable way, raising the bar for modern comedies even as they reshaped the two genres they were sending up. Blazing Saddles Meets Young Frankenstein: The 50th Anniversary of the Year of Mel Brooks explores in depth the zeitgeist and cinematic alchemy that led to 1974 becoming "the year of Mel Brooks."
