Sinossi

In "The Auxilia of the Roman Imperial Army," George Leonard Cheesman offers a meticulous examination of the auxiliary forces that complemented the legions during the Roman Empire. Through a blend of archaeological evidence, historical texts, and an insightful analysis of military structures, Cheesman unveils the critical role these non-citizen troops played in securing and expanding the empire's frontiers. His prose is both accessible and scholarly, reflecting a deft command of military history while engaging the reader with vivid descriptions of battles, troop formations, and the everyday lives of these soldiers, all within the broader context of Roman imperial policy and societal structures. George Leonard Cheesman was a distinguished historian and archaeologist, whose rigorous scholarship in Roman military history was deeply influenced by his background in classical studies and field research in ancient sites. Cheesman'Äôs dedication to uncovering the multifaceted nature of Roman military organization led him to focus on auxilia, recognizing their indispensable contributions to Rome's supremacy. His expertise in the field is evident in his comprehensive narrative that simultaneously educates and captivates the reader. For scholars, students, and enthusiasts of Roman history, "The Auxilia of the Roman Imperial Army" is an indispensable resource that not only illuminates the complexities of Roman military logistics but also enhances our understanding of the empire'Äôs diverse cultural fabric. Cheesman's work is a compelling invitation to rethink traditional narratives of Roman warfare, making it a must-read for anyone seeking deeper insights into one of history's most powerful civilizations.

What does it mean to belong? In The Land is Sung, musicologist Thomas M. Pooley shows how performances of song, dance, and praise poetry connect Zulu communities to their ancestral homes and genealogies. For those without land tenure in the province of KwaZulu-Nata, performances articulate a sense of place. Migrants express their allegiances through performance and spiritual relationships to land are embodied in rituals that invoke ancestral connection while advancing well-being through intergenerational communication. Engaging with justice and environmental ethics, education and indigenous knowledge systems, musical and linguistic analysis, and the ethics of recording practice, Pooley's analysis draws on genres of music and dance recorded in the midlands and borderlands of South Africa, and in Johannesburg's inner city. His detailed sound writing captures the visceral experiences of performances in everyday life. The book is richly illustrated and there is a companion website featuring both video and audio examples.

The story of the Ancient Israelites in Egypt is one of the most famous stories in the world, and one of the most contentious from a historical standpoint. Today, most people know about the relationship between the ancient Israelites and the Egyptians from the Old Testament book of Exodus, and the numerous feature films that often depict the dealings between the two peoples in contentious ways. The deadly plagues, the crossing of the Red Sea, the arduous 40 years the Israelites spent in the desert, and the Ten Commandments all make the Exodus unforgettable, but they’ve also left generations of scholars wondering just how accurate the Scripture is.
The return of the Israelites to Israel is, of course, inextricably linked to the history of the Jewish people, their dispersal throughout the Mediterranean world, and their reestablishment of the modern state of Israel in the wake of the horrors of the Holocaust. The small area around Jerusalem was originally known to the ancient Greeks as Ioudaioi, hence the name Judea. An Iron Age kingdom is said, in the Bible, to have existed as a successor to the United Kingdom of Israel, which, it is claimed, existed from approximately 1010-930 BCE. The split in the kingdom, according to the Bible, was the result of the refusal of the northern tribes to accept the son of Solomon, Rehoboam, as their king. The Bible claims that, initially, only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the House of David, but Benjamin also joined with the loyalists after a few years. Two kingdoms, Judah in the south and Israel in the north, co-existed uneasily, with frequent outbreaks of war between them in the following years. Judah was invaded by the Egyptian Pharaoh, Shishak, in the 5th year of Rehoboam’s reign, and Jerusalem was sacked. Rehoboam gave the Egyptians all of the nation’s treasure and became an Egyptian vassal.

Maharashtra, India's richest state by GDP, has its eyes set on becoming the country's first trillion-dollar economy by 2025. At the same time, Marathwada -- a historically backward part of the state adjoining the distressed Vidarbha region -- has seen a surge in farmer suicides.
At the heart of the crisis is a cyclical drought that has persisted for almost a decade. Relief packages and loan waivers have not reversed the trend. On the contrary, the stories of dystopia grow more tragic every year as thousands of farmer families flee to the big cities, while those who stay back are plagued by bad credit and crop loss.
Landscapes of Loss tells the story of Marathwada through the accounts of its people: marginal farmers, Dalits, landless labourers, farm widows and children. It lays bare the complex factors that have brought the region to this pass -- a story representative, in many ways, of the agrarian unrest in large parts of rural India.
