Sinopsis

In "Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest," George Borrow intricately weaves personal narrative, cultural observation, and philosophical discourse, resulting in a rich tapestry reflecting 19th-century British society. Through the lens of the titular character, Borrow explores themes of identity, belonging, and the mystical connections between people and place. His lyrical prose, imbued with vibrant imagery and folk influences, draws inspiration from his own diverse experiences as a linguist and traveler, establishing a unique literary style that blurs the line between autobiography and fiction. George Borrow, a renowned writer and linguist, gained prominence for his interest in Romani culture and language, experiences that profoundly shape "Lavengro." His early life, marked by a restlessness and thirst for knowledge, led him to pursue the study of languages and engage deeply with marginalized communities. This background informs the narrative's rich characterizations and inviting exploration of spirituality, reflecting Borrow's complex relationships with religion and culture during an era of sociopolitical change. This book is a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersection of personal narrative and cultural anthropology. Borrow's eloquent exploration of the human condition offers invaluable insights that resonate with contemporary readers, inviting them to reflect on their own search for identity amidst the tapestry of life.

Harry Wethermill, the brilliant young scientist, a graduate of Oxford and Munich, has made a fortune from his inventions, and is taking a vacation at Aix-les-Bains. There he meets, and immediately falls in love with, the young and beautiful Celia Harland, who serves as companion to the aging but warm-hearted Madam Dauvray of Paris. All this is observed by Julius Ricardo, a retired financier from the City of London, who spends every August at Aix, expecting there to find a pleasant and peaceful life. Imagine his consternation when he learns that Mme. Dauvray has been brutally murdered, and imagine Harry Wethermill's consternation when he learns that every finger of suspicion is pointed at the now vanished Celia Harland.
Implored to do so by Wethermill, Ricardo asks his friend Inspector Hanaud, the great detective of the Paris Sûreté (who is also vacationing in Aix) to involve himself in the case so that the truth may come out. Hanaud agrees to do so (with the permission of the Aix police, of course), and goes to work. Will he be up to the job? And will Harry Wethermill ultimately be glad that he called in the great man? We can only wait to find out. But surely Hanaud will exercise his powerful little grey cells – one of several characteristics he shares with a famous Belgian detective of later decades, and indeed some scholars of mystery stories suggest that Agatha Christie, in her invention of Hercule Poirot, owes a debt to Mason and his invention of Inspector Hanaud. And indeed Julius Ricardo has than a passing resemblance to Arthur Hastings, Poirot's sidekick, who is invariably a few confused steps behind the detective

Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award • Read by Audie Award-winning narrator Barrie Kreinik
"Worthy of comparison to Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea . . . A splendid achievement from a writer at the height of her powers."—Historical Novels Review (Editors' Choice)
"This book has it all. Unnatural Creatures is an atmospheric, reimagined classic about the lines we cross for loyalty and love." —Foreword Reviews
For the first time, the story of the three women closest to Victor Frankenstein is revealed in a sweeping reimagining of Frankenstein by the author of The Lost History of Dreams.
THE MOTHER. Caroline Frankenstein will do anything to protect her family against the revolutions engulfing 18th-century Europe. In doing so, she creates her own monster in the form of her scientist son, Victor.
THE BRIDE. Rescued by Caroline as a four-year-old beggar, Elizabeth Lavenza knows the only way she can repay the Frankensteins is by accepting Victor's hand in marriage. But when Elizabeth's heart yearns for another, the lives of those she most loves collide with the unnatural creature born of Victor's profane experiments.
THE SERVANT. After an abusive childhood, Justine Moritz is taken in by Caroline to serve the Frankensteins. Justine's devotion to Caroline and Elizabeth knows no bounds . . . until a tragedy changes her irrevocably. Her fate sets her against Victor's monster, who is desperate to wreak revenge against the Frankensteins.
Stunningly written and exquisitely atmospheric, Unnatural Creatures shocks new life into Mary Shelley's beloved gothic classic by revealing the feminine side of the tale.

Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.
THE STORY OF THE INEXPERIENCED GHOST: The scene amidst which Clayton told his last story comes back very vividly to my mind. There he sat, for the greater part of the time, in the corner of the authentic settle by the spacious open fire, and Sanderson sat beside him smoking the Broseley clay that bore his name.

A foundling of mysterious parentage brought up by Mr. Allworthy on his country estate, Tom Jones is deeply in love with the seemingly unattainable Sophia Western, the beautiful daughter of the neighboring squire though he sometimes succumbs to the charms of the local girls. When Tom is banished to make his own fortune and Sophia follows him to London to escape an arranged marriage, the adventure begins. A vivid Hogarthian panorama of eighteenth-century life, spiced with danger and intrigue, bawdy exuberance and good-natured authorial interjections, Tom Jones is one of the greatest and most ambitious comic novels in English literature.
BOOK 14: As several gentlemen in these times, by the wonderful force of genius only, without the least assistance of learning, perhaps, without being well able to read, have made a considerable figure in the republic of letters; the modern critics, I am told, have lately begun to assert, that all kind of learning is entirely useless to a writer; and, indeed, no other than a kind of fetters on the natural sprightliness and activity of the imagination, which is thus weighed down, and prevented from soaring to those high flights which otherwise it would be able to reach.

A stormy evening of olive and silver was closing in, as Father Brown, wrapped in a grey Scotch plaid, came to the end of a grey Scotch valley and beheld the strange castle of Glengyle. It stopped one end of the glen or hollow like a blind alley; and it looked like the end of the world. Rising in steep roofs and spires of seagreen slate in the manner of the old French-Scotch chateaux, it reminded an Englishman of the sinister steeple-hats of witches in fairy tales; and the pine woods that rocked round the green turrets looked, by comparison, as black as numberless flocks of ravens.
