Sinossi

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's "Science of Logic" is a profound exploration of the nature and development of logic as a dialectical process. Written in the early 19th century, the text reflects Hegel's philosophical project to reconcile ideas of contradiction and unity, where he meticulously dissects traditional logical structures. Employing a dense, yet methodical style, Hegel transforms logic from a mere tool for scientific inquiry into an organic system that captures the dynamic and evolving nature of reality itself. Notably, the work offers a systematic account of concepts such as being, essence, and notion, thus situating itself within the broader context of German Idealism. Hegel, a pivotal figure in Western philosophy, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous socio-political landscape of his time, particularly the aftermath of the French Revolution. His engagement with metaphysics and epistemology paved the way for this foundational work, as Hegel sought to articulate a comprehensive framework that accounted for human thought and its evolution in the face of historical development. His intellectual environment, steeped in Enlightenment ideals yet marked by emerging contradictions, directly shaped the themes present in "Science of Logic." This seminal work is recommended for readers keen on understanding the intricacies of Hegelian thought and its enduring impact on contemporary philosophy. With its ambitious scope and innovative treatment of logic, "Science of Logic" challenges readers to reconsider the relationship between thought and reality, making it an essential read for students of philosophy, logic, and even the social sciences.

Gentleness is often misunderstood as a sign of weakness, yet it embodies a strength that is both quiet and profound. In this chapter, we explore the true nature of gentleness and its essential role in fostering resilience, growth, and meaningful connections in our lives. Gentleness is not about being passive or submissive; rather, it is an active choice to approach the world with a tender heart, an open mind, and a compassionate spirit.
The concept of gentleness invites us to slow down, listen carefully, and respond to life’s challenges with grace. It is a deliberate practice of choosing calm over chaos, empathy over judgment, and understanding over reaction. In a world that often values speed, assertiveness, and dominance, gentleness offers an alternative path—a path that emphasizes mindfulness, care, and the beauty of subtle influence.
Throughout history, many influential figures have demonstrated that true strength can be found in a gentle approach. Their lives remind us that power does not solely reside in loud voices or aggressive actions, but also in the quiet determination to remain kind and compassionate even in the face of adversity. This perspective shifts the focus from the external measures of success to the inner quality of one’s character. It is through gentleness that we can nurture our own well-being and create a ripple effect that transforms our relationships and communities.

It's easy to want to revisit those rooms again and again, and at the same time, there's this desire to keep them untouched and sacred.
These are brief, re-tellings of my favorite pang-inducing erotic memories. Some of them haven't happened yet, others are so etched into my psyche that they'll always be a part of this house.

Following books by Malcolm Gladwell and Dan Ariely, noted economics professor William L. Silber explores the Hail Mary effect, from its origins in sports to its applications to history, nature, politics, and business.
A quarterback like Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers gambles with a Hail Mary pass at the end of a football game when he has nothing to lose -- the risky throw might turn defeat into victory, or end in a meaningless interception. Rodgers may not realize it, but he has much in common with figures such as George Washington, Rosa Parks, Woodrow Wilson, and Adolph Hitler, all of whom changed the modern world with their risk-loving decisions.
In The Power of Nothing to Lose, award-winning economist William Silber explores the phenomenon in politics, war, and business, where situations with a big upside and limited downside trigger gambling behavior like with a Hail Mary. Silber describes in colorful detail how the American Revolution turned on such a gamble. The famous scene of Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas night to attack the enemy may not look like a Hail Mary, but it was. Washington said days before his risky decision, “If this fails I think the game will be pretty well up.” Rosa Parks remained seated in the white section of an Alabama bus, defying local segregation laws, an act that sparked the modern civil rights movement in America. It was a life-threatening decision for her, but she said, “I was not frightened. I just made up my mind that as long as we accepted that kind of treatment it would continue, so I had nothing to lose.”
The risky exploits of George Washington and Rosa Parks made the world a better place, but demagogues have inflicted great damage with Hail Marys. Towards the end of World War II, Adolph Hitler ordered a desperate counterattack, the Battle of the Bulge, to stem the Allied advance into Germany. He said, “The outcome of the battle would spell either life or death for the German nation.” Hitler failed to change the war’s outcome, but his desperate gamble inflicted great collateral damage, including the worst wartime atrocity on American troops in Europe.
Silber shares these illuminating insights on these figures and more, from Woodrow Wilson to Donald Trump, asylum seekers to terrorists and rogue traders. Collectively they illustrate that downside protection fosters risky undertakings, that it changes the world in ways we least expect.

The fifty poems collected in Gillian Bickley’s Over The Years have been chosen by Verner Bickley from her five previously published collections.
“Sensitive, serious, sincere and sometimes a little sad...." (Dumitru M. Ion ( Romania), Member of the Arts and Sciences Academy in R. Macedonia, etc.,2014)
"Driven by curiosity as a poet but also by responsibility as the president of "The International Festival Curtea de Argeş Poetry Nights" in Romania (There have been twenty editions, attended in total by over fifteen hundred guests from about a hundred countries), I read and translate the lyrics of hundreds of poets. That's how I discovered the exceptional poet Gillian Bickley from Hong Kong. What firstly drew my attention was the savant level of her poetry; the science of balancing the rational with the sentiment. Each of her poems is sometimes a small novel, an essay or at other times a lyrical sublimate. Her poems are remembrances: from the past (an ancient past, a medieval past, and so on), from her own past or a possible reader's past. The way of shaping her poetry especially fascinates the professional reader. Because, of course, a professional poet (as Gillian Bickley is) will always need a professional reader.” – Dumitru M. Ion, 2016.
