  As I put my jeans on that morning, I kept telling myself, “Wearing jeans is not a sin and I should be able to wear them anywhere I want.” I knew though that if anyone from “the church” saw me, to them it would only confirm that I had backslid and was on my way to hell. Some of them thought that already, simply because we had left the church we had been attending since 2001 and were now going to an Assembly of God. But I had to take this first step for myself.

  Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, often noted as the most important philosophical work of the 20th century, had a broad goal: to identify the relationship between language and reality, and to define the limits of science.
  Following on from Wittgenstein 100 years later, Signe Gjessing updates and reimagines the Tractatus, marrying poetry with philosophy to test the boundaries of reality. Stunning, knowing, and revitalising, and glinting with stars, silk, and ecstasy, this is poetry which exacts the logical consequence of philosophy, while locating beauty and significance in the nonsense of the world.

  A Fold in the Map

  A Fold in the Map charts two very different voyages: a tracing of the dislocations of leaving one's native country, and a searching exploration of grief at a father's final painful journey. In the first part of the collection, Plenty — "before the fold" — the poems deal with family, and longing for home from a new country, with all the ambiguity and doubleness this perspective entails. In the book's second half, Meet My Father, the poems recount events more life-changing than merely moving abroad — a father's illness and death, the loss of some of the plenty of the earlier poems.

  Professor Richard Myers, now in his 70s and suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease, is about to receive a lifetime achievement award for his work in the development of in-vitro fertilization. That calls for a family reunion, and given this high-functioning, dysfunctional family, there’s bound to be trouble ahead. As they gather, old resentments erupt as they fight over Richard’s legacy while facing another family member’s serious illness. 
   
  Incudes a conversation with playwright Alexis Zegerman. 
   
  This play is part of L.A. Theatre Works’ Relativity Series of science-themed plays. Lead funding for the Relativity Series is provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, bridging science and the arts in the modern world.
