Sinossi

In "Pictographs of the North American Indians," Garrick Mallery meticulously examines the intricate world of Native American pictography, focusing on the visual symbols employed by various tribes across North America. Using a combination of ethnographic research and detailed illustrations, Mallery presents a systematic categorization of these pictographs, shedding light on their meanings and cultural significance. The book employs an analytical style, blending scholarly rigor with vivid descriptions that invite readers to engage deeply with the visual language of Indigenous peoples, thereby contributing to the broader discourse of American Indian studies in the late 19th century. Garrick Mallery, an esteemed art historian and ethnologist, dedicated much of his career to the preservation and understanding of Indigenous cultures. His prior experiences with the Smithsonian Institution and time spent among Native communities significantly informed his perspective, allowing him to approach the topic with both respect and critical insight. Mallery's passion for documenting and interpreting the lived experiences of Native peoples is evident throughout the text, making it a crucial contribution to the fields of anthropology and art history. "Pictographs of the North American Indians" is an essential read for anthropologists, historians, and anyone interested in Indigenous art and culture. Mallery'Äôs detailed analyses and rich illustrations provide an invaluable resource that deepens understanding of Native American heritage. This work not only celebrates the beauty of pictography but also calls for the preservation of Indigenous narratives in a rapidly changing world.

The Blues - A Very Short...

Praised as "suave, soulful, ebullient" (Tom Waits), Elijah Wald is one of the leading popular music critics of his generation. In The Blues, Wald surveys a genre at the heart of American culture.

It has been defined by lyrical structure, or as a progression of chords, or as a set of practices reflecting West African "tonal and rhythmic approaches," using a five-note "blues scale." He traces its roots in work and praise songs, and shows how it was transformed by such professional performers as W. C. Handy, who first popularized the blues a century ago. He follows its evolution from Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith through Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix; identifies the impact of rural field recordings of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, and others; explores the role of blues in the development of both country music and jazz; and looks at the popular rhythm and blues trends of the 1940s and 1950s, from the uptown West Coast style of T-Bone Walker to the "down home" Chicago sound of Muddy Waters. Wald brings the story up to the present, touching on the effects of blues on American poetry, and its connection to modern styles such as rap.

As with all of Oxford's Very Short Introductions, The Blues tells you—with insight, clarity, and wit—everything you need to know to understand this quintessentially American musical genre.

XENOPHON: Athens vs Sparta - Why...

The Polity of the Lacedaemonians talks about the laws and institutions created by Lycurgus, which train and develop Spartan citizens from birth to old age. It only because of Xenophon that we have most of our knowledge about the Spartans. Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. He was a pupil of Socrates. He marched with the Spartans, and was exiled from Athens which may explain why he is so negative and sarcastic when describing the Athenian democracy. Sparta gave him land and property in Scillus, where he lived for many years before having to move once more, to settle in Corinth. He died in 354 B.C..
"But having realised at one time that Sparta, although one of the most sparsely populated of cities, proved to be the most powerful and most renowned city in Greece, I wondered how could this possibly have happened. However, when I perceived the practices of the Spartans, I wondered no longer". This .is a treatise by the ancient Greek historian Xenophon, describing the institutions, customs, and practices of the ancient Spartans. The work examines the reasons for Sparta's power and renown, despite the city state's sparse population. There are fifteen chapters: the first thirteen enumerate the practices and institutions that made Sparta great; the last two describe Sparta's decline and the survival of its monarchy. The Polity dates to the period between 387 and 375 BC, and is the only contemporary account of the Spartan political system which survives. Together with Plutarch's "Life of Lycurgus", it provides the most detailed surviving description of the Spartan state, and is considered the best source of information about Spartan women during classical antiquity.
Xenophon then describes the laws and customs of the city state Athens in the Polity of the Athenians.

'A very British love-letter to the beauty of flint' Daily Telegraph
Joanne Bourne has been in awe of flint as long as she can remember.
It was all around her where she grew up in Kent: used for garden walls, to edge drives and weight dustbin lids, as well as to build pubs, churches, Roman villas and castles. For centuries it was the only building stone available.
It is also magical. Made from the remains of plankton and sea sponges, it is second only in hardness to a diamond and can be used to make fire. Part of human development for three million years, it was used as a weapon to hunt and in war, and hung as protection against thunderbolts and fairies.
In a deeply personal love letter to this extraordinary 'biogenic' rock, Bourne traces its geological, architectural and social history and invites us to roam with her in search of it on her beloved North Downs.
Fusing science, poetry, history and a profound love of landscape, this is her heartfelt, thoroughly persuasive tribute to the stone she calls 'an art project of the great divine'.
