Sinossi

In "The Life of St. Francis of Assisi," G. K. Chesterton offers a compelling exploration of the beloved saint's life, illuminated by his signature wit and profound insight. Chesterton's narrative is both biographical and theological as he delves into Francis's radical embrace of poverty, humility, and love for nature, contrasting these virtues against the backdrop of medieval society. The literary style is rich with allegorical depth and a poetic cadence that reflects not only the historical context of Francis's time but also Chesterton's philosophical musings on faith and modernity, making the text both accessible and intellectually stimulating. Chesterton, a fervent Christian apologist and one of the early 20th century's notable literary figures, drew upon his own experiences with faith and human compassion to bring Francis to life. His deep affection for the simple, joyous aspects of Christianity resonates throughout the narrative, illustrating how the saint's radical ideals challenge social conventions and inspire a universal call to compassion. Chesterton's admiration for Francis is evident, embodying the author's broader critiques of materialism and spiritual desolation present in his era. This biography will resonate deeply with readers looking to reconnect with the foundational elements of faith and simplicity. Chesterton's engaging prose invites both devout Christians and secular readers alike to reflect on the transformative power of love and humility that St. Francis epitomized. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a greater understanding of the spiritual journey and the enduring relevance of one of Christendom's most iconic figures.

Adrienne Barbeau never set out to be a sex symbol and she never planned on giving birth to twins when she was 51 but both those stories and a lot more are detailed in this witty, revealing memoir.
From her early years as one of the first Go-Go girls in New York (“No one said Mafia out loud in those days. There was always the fear you wouldn’t live to say anything else.”) to starring on Broadway in Grease (“Alexander Cohen swore the only way we’d win a Tony was over his dead body”) Adrienne tells tales about her two hit television series (Maude and Carnivale), her many television and feature films (The Fog, Escape From New York, Cannonball Run, Swamp Thing, Creepshow), and her singing career (“Doc Severinson and the band had been in the audience during my nude foray off-Broadway in Stag Movie”).  With humour and fearlessness, she shares her romance with a superstar, her marriage to a famous film director, her marriage to a much younger man and her successful battle with infertility.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and explorer who made 4 explorations across the Atlantic Ocean, paving the course for European discovery and settlement of the Americas. His journeys were the first European contacts with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, and were financed by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain.
Christopher Columbus is an Anglicization of “Christophorus Columbus,” a Latin name. Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa and spoke a Ligurian dialect as his mother tongue, according to most intellectuals. He went to sea at an early age and traveled all over the world, as far north as the British Islands and as far south as Ghana. He wed Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, a Portuguese noblewoman, and resided in Lisbon for some years, but later on wed a Castilian girlfriend, with whom he had one child. Columbus, who was primarily self-taught, was skilled in geography, astronomy, and history. He created a technique to find a western sea path to the East Indies, with the objective of benefiting from the wealthy spice trade.
Christopher Columbus has had a huge impact on the discovery of the American continent, and is still honored and respected to this day, despite of the controversies around his behavior and interaction with the locals. Let’s see what these contradicting opinions are all about.

From an acclaimed Wall Street Journal reporter comes the first biography of the enigmatic leader of the AI revolution, charting his ascent within the tech world as well as his ambitions for this powerful new technology.

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a chatbot that captivated the world with its uncanny ability to hold humanlike conversations. Not even a year later, on November 17, 2023, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, was summarily fired on a video call by the company’s board. The firing made headlines around the globe: OpenAI is the leader in the race to build AGI―artificial general intelligence, or AI that can think like a human being―and Altman is the most prominent figure in the field. Yet it was mere days before Altman was back running the company he had co-founded, with most of the directors who voted to fire him themselves removed from the board.

The episode was a demonstration of how quickly the industry is moving, and of Altman’s power to bend reality to his will. In The Optimist, the Wall Street Journal reporter Keach Hagey presents the most detailed account yet of Altman’s rise, his time as legendary entrepreneur Paul Graham’s protégé and successor as head of Y Combinator, the start-up accelerator where Altman became the premier power broker in Silicon Valley; the founding of OpenAI and his recruitment of a small yet superior team.

Hagey conducted more than 250 interviews, with Altman’s family, friends, teachers, mentors, co-founders, colleagues, investors, and portfolio companies, in addition to spending hours with Altman himself.
With both the promise and peril of AI increasing by the day, Hagey delivers a nuanced, balanced, revelatory account of the individual who is leading us into what he himself has called “the intelligence age.”

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.
