Sinossi

In "The Barbarism of Berlin," G. K. Chesterton critiques the cultural and moral ramifications of the burgeoning modernity in early 20th-century Europe, particularly focusing on the ascendance of German nationalism and militarism. Through a blend of incisive satire and eloquent prose, Chesterton juxtaposes the civilizational achievements of Western culture with the barbaric tendencies he perceives in the political ideologies of his time. The book serves not only as a series of essays but also as a gripping commentary on the philosophical and ethical implications of war, invoking themes of loyalty, identity, and the soul of a nation in Crisis. Chesterton's distinctive literary style engages readers through wit and paradox, making complex ideas accessible while inviting deep reflection on moral integrity in times of turmoil. G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a prolific English writer, philosopher, and journalist who cultivated a reputation for his provocative ideas and formidable intellect. His keen insights into society, religion, and human nature stem from a diverse background in literature and a lifelong confrontation with modernism, often opposing prevailing ideologies. This book emerged from his passionate defense of the values of civilization amidst the looming threat of World War I, positioning him as a defender of Christian and traditional values during an era of upheaval. "The Barbarism of Berlin" is an essential read for those seeking to understand the philosophical undercurrents of pre-War Europe and the cultural discourse that underpinned it. Chesterton's engaging narrative style and thought-provoking arguments make this work not only a historical artifact but also a timeless reflection on human values in the face of barbarism. This book invites readers to reflect on the moral quandaries of their own times and challenges them to consider what it truly means to be civilized.

The relationship between the world’s two largest Jewish tribes (in Israel and the United States) is consequential for Jews and for Judaism, but it provides important insights also for Christians – about Jews, Judaism, and Israel, and about America and Christianity. The cultural, sociological, political, and even religious differences that separate Israeli and American Jews highlight the essence of historic and contemporary Judaism. Christian revival always pointed to the Jewish roots of Christianity and of the Christian Bible. Indeed, by gaining a better understanding of Judaism, Christians gain a bette understanding of their own faith and of America’s Judeo-Christian values.
This book answers the following questions:
-Is Judaism a religion or a nation?
-Why are American Jews ambivalent about Israel, whereas Christians support Israel without hesitation?
-Why are American Jews losing touch with Judaism, whereas Christians are connecting with their own Jewish roots?
-Why are most American Jews liberal-Democrats, whereas most Israelis are conservative?
-Why is antisemitism flourishing on the left?
-Why is American Jewry demographically stagnant, while Israeli Jewry grows by leaps and bounds?
-What is the future of American Jewry and its relationship with Israel?

Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Caligula, served as the third Roman Emperor from 37 to 41 AD. Born into the illustrious Julio-Claudian dynasty, he was the son of Germanicus, a beloved Roman general, and Agrippina the Elder, Augustus' granddaughter. His lineage placed him firmly within the first reigning family of the Roman Empire, setting the stage for his eventual rise to power.
The Roman Empire had already undergone significant transitions by the time Caligula entered the world. Tiberius, his great-uncle, succeeded Augustus as emperor in 14 AD, adopting Germanicus as his son. Caligula’s early years were shaped by the Roman military campaigns under Germanicus in Germania, where he earned the nickname “Caligula,” meaning “little boot,” due to the small military boots he wore as a child during these campaigns with his father’s troops.
When Germanicus died under mysterious circumstances in Antioch in 19 AD, Caligula’s family was plunged into turmoil. Agrippina, now a widow, returned to Rome with her six children, only to become embroiled in a bitter conflict with Tiberius. Her family’s tragic fall resulted in the deaths or exile of most of her children, leaving Caligula as the only surviving male. In 26 AD, Tiberius withdrew to the island of Capri, where he lived in seclusion. Caligula followed him in 31 AD, and after Tiberius' death in 37 AD, Caligula ascended to the throne as emperor.

Clear and illuminating commentary on one of Bodhidharma's most important texts—designed to help Chan practitioners apply timeless and essential advice to their practice

Legend has it that more than a thousand years ago an Indian Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma arrived in China. His approach to teaching was unlike that of any of the Buddhist missionaries who had come to China before him. He confounded the emperor with cryptic dialogues, traveled the country, lived in a cave in the mountains, and eventually paved the way for a unique and illuminating approach to Buddhist teachings that would later spread across the whole of East Asia in the form of Chan—later to be known as Seon in Korean, Thien in Vietnamese, and Zen in Japanese.

This book, a translation and commentary on one of Bodhidharma's most important texts, explores Bodhidharma's revolutionary teachings in English. Guo Gu weaves his commentary through modern and relatable contexts, showing that this centuries-old wisdom is just as crucial for life now as it was when it first came to be. Masterfully translated and accompanied by helpful insights to supplement daily practice, The Essence of Chan is the perfect guide for those new to Chan, those returning, or those who have been practicing for years.
