Sinossi

In 'George Bernard Shaw,' G. K. Chesterton crafts a compelling exploration of the celebrated playwright and critic, offering astute insights into Shaw's complex character and formidable intellect. Chesterton's literary style blends wit and profundity, employing a conversational yet authoritative tone that navigates through Shaw's major works and philosophical stances. Drawing from a wealth of cultural and historical context, Chesterton adeptly frames Shaw as a pivotal figure in the transformation of modern theatre, emphasizing his role as a social reformer and a provocateur who challenged conventional morals and artistic norms. Chesterton himself, renowned for his keen observations and opposing views, was deeply influenced by Shaw's audacity and influence in the literary world. Their shared roots in the same era of British thought allowed Chesterton to engage with Shaw in a unique way, nurturing a rich dialogue that comments not only on Shaw's contributions but also on the broader currents of early 20th-century thought and artistry. The interplay of their ideas serves to amplify the thematic concerns both writers shared, particularly regarding social justice and individualism. This book is not merely a biography; it is an invitation into the vibrant intellectual landscape of its time. Readers seeking to understand the dynamics between two literary giants will find Chesterton's work illuminating and enriching. Recommended for scholars, theatre enthusiasts, and anyone intrigued by the intersection of literature and social critique.

The first African American Rockette charts her journey to one of the world's most celebrated dance troupes in this gripping memoir that, for the first time, goes behind the velvet curtains at Radio City's legendary holiday show.
“Smashing through glass windows and paving the way for others requires a special blend of bravery and perseverance. Being a pioneer involves breaking down stubborn barriers, challenging closed-minded people and navigating through instances of racism and prejudice. This journey often included facing ongoing resistance from individuals who were unwilling to embrace change. It’s believing in your dream—that you can be and do whatever it is that you love.”—Jennifer Jones
The Radio City Rockettes are as American as baseball, hot dogs, and the Fourth of July. Their legendary synchronized leg kicks, precise lines, and megawatt smiles have charmed audiences for a century. But there is a hidden side to this illustrious national institution. When the Rockettes began in 1925, Black people were not allowed to dance on stage with white people. However, during the Civil Rights Movement, dance history changed significantly when Black and white dancers were permitted to perform together, marking a moment of progress and inclusivity in the world of dance and entertainment. Even so, as late as the early 1980s, Rockette director Violet Holmes said having “one or two Black girls in the line would definitely distract.”
In 1987 the 63-year color barrier at Radio City was finally broken by one brave and tenacious woman. When she arrived, Jennifer Jones was met with pushback—a fierce resistance she details in this intimate and inspiring memoir. After overcoming seemingly impossible odds to join the line of The Rockettes, a PR director summoned the Black dancer to her hotel room and announced, “You’re old news, nobody cares about you, your story or anything about you. You're just lucky to be here.”
Those words would haunt this shy, insecure biracial woman, who had always felt like an outsider.
Like Gelsey Kirkland’s iconic Dancing on My Grave, Becoming Spectacular allows us to walk in Jones’ tap shoes—beautiful and glittering, yet painful and binding. Bringing into focus the wounded life of a trailblazer, this searing memoir is also a triumphant celebration of a spirit who refused to be counted out.

When Joselin Linder was in her twenties, her legs started to swell. She thought little of it, until her health problems started to compound in ways that baffled her doctors. Diagnosed with extreme liver blockage and dangerous levels of lymph fluid, Joselin turned to the most similar case she could think of—her father’s.
Joselin compared the medical chart of her father—who had died of an undiagnosed disease, ten years prior—-with that of an uncle who had died under similarly strange circumstances. Delving further into the past, she discovered her that her great grandmother had symptoms like hers, and she recognized that she was dealing with something more than a fluke. Whatever had killed her father, uncle, and great-grandmother was likely genetic, and the clock was ticking for the family members of her own generation.
Setting out to build a more complete picture of the disease that haunted her family, she approached Dr. Christine “Kricket” Seidman, the head of a group of world-class genetic researchers at Harvard Medical School and a colleague of her late father’s, for help. Dr. Seidman has been attempting the map the faulty gene for seventeen years and has confirmed not only that Joselin’s symptoms are genetic, but that Joselin’s family is this disease’s founder population—a group of people experiencing the baffling symptoms of a brand new mutation. Here, Joselin she tells the story of their gene: the lives it claimed and the future of genetics it foretells.
Digging into family records and medical history, interviews with family and friends and her own experiences with Harvard doctors, Joselin pieces together the story of a deadly gene to write a gripping and unforgettable exploration of family, history, love, and mortality. A compelling story of survival and perseverance, THE FAMILY GENE is an important story of a young woman reckoning with her father’s death, her own mortality, and her ethical obligations to herself, family, and society.
