  The mythology of the Sumerians stands as one of the earliest recorded religious traditions, shaping the beliefs of later civilizations in Mesopotamia and beyond. As one of the first urban societies, the Sumerians established a complex pantheon of gods and heroes that explained the forces of nature, human existence, and the divine order of the universe. Their myths, inscribed on clay tablets in cuneiform script, offer a glimpse into a world where deities governed every aspect of life, from the rising sun to the floods of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. These stories, rich with symbolism and allegory, not only influenced later cultures but also laid the foundation for many of the myths and legends still told today.  
  Sumerian civilization thrived in southern Mesopotamia, in what is now modern-day Iraq, around 3100 BCE. The Sumerians built city-states such as Uruk, Ur, and Nippur, each with its own patron deity. Religion was deeply intertwined with governance, as rulers were seen as intermediaries between the gods and the people. The belief that divine favor determined a city’s prosperity reinforced the importance of rituals, offerings, and temple constructions, particularly the iconic ziggurats that served as sacred centers of worship. The Sumerian gods were not distant, benevolent figures but rather powerful beings with human emotions and rivalries, shaping the world through both harmony and conflict.  
  The primary sources of Sumerian mythology come from cuneiform texts, including the Enuma Elish, various temple hymns, and the Epic of Gilgamesh. These texts preserve tales of creation, divine wars, and the struggles of mortal heroes. The myths of Anu, Enlil, and Enki explain the structure of the cosmos and the forces that govern it, while legends of Inanna and Dumuzi reveal the themes of love, fertility, and the cycle of life and death.

  The ancient world was full of many fantastic cities and places, and like today’s major cities, the great ancient cities were hubs of trade, religion, and science. Writing was first invented in ancient cities, and many important scientific discoveries were also made in them, some of which are still used in the modern world. Among the many cities of the ancient world, Rome and Athens may come to mind first, but the city of Babylon in the land of Mesopotamia was already an ancient, venerated city when the others were still inconsequential settlements.  
  	Today, Babylon has become a byword for greed, excess, and licentiousness, mostly due to its mention in the Bible, but a closer examination reveals that Babylon was so much more, and even perhaps the most important city in the ancient world. Ancient Babylon was home to great dynasties that produced some of the world’s most influential leaders, most notably Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, and these rulers invoked their wills on the entire ancient Near East and have been remembered as both progressive and cruel all at the same time. Babylon was also the seat of culture in ancient Mesopotamia and the place where scholars made amazing scientific advances that would not be eclipsed for several centuries. An examination of ancient Babylon demonstrates that it was truly the first great city in the ancient world. 
  	Of course, the sheer span of history between Babylon’s power and today has produced plenty of historical questions and controversy. One of the things people most closely associate Babylon with is the Hanging Gardens, which, like the Great Pyramid of Giza, were considered both a technological marvel and an aesthetic masterpiece. Ancient historians believed that the Hanging Gardens were constructed around the 7th century B.C. after the second rise of Babylon.

He met people from North Vietnam who showed him the real enemy was the U.S. war machine. Being an American was not popular in those days, but the people of the world showed Smith kindness and kept him alive when he ran out of money. The long road to decision showed him that people everywhere want peace, not war.Mark Paul Smith's hitchhike from Indiana to India in 1972 changed him from being an Air Force Officer into a conscientious objector. His faith in the United States of America was restored when he sued the government and won his case in federal court.His journey is one of faith, contemplation, and awakening, mixed with the freedom and abandonment of the 70s.
