Sinossi

In "The Greatest Works," Friedrich Nietzsche distills his profound philosophical insights into a compelling narrative that questions the foundations of morality, truth, and existence. Through a masterful blend of aphoristic prose and lyrical depth, Nietzsche navigates the intricacies of human experience, drawing on themes of individualism, nihilism, and the concept of the Übermensch. Set against the backdrop of the late 19th century—an era rife with existential dilemmas and revolutionary thought—this collection serves as both a critique of contemporary values and a bold call for personal authenticity in a world teetering on the brink of modernity. Friedrich Nietzsche, a German philosopher known for his radical ideas and provocative writing style, was influenced by his extensive academic background in classical philology and a deep discontent with prevailing philosophical doctrines. His experiences with illness, isolation, and societal rejection fueled his desire to challenge established norms. "The Greatest Works" encapsulates his journey through despair to empowerment, inviting readers to confront their own beliefs and to engage with the unsettling truths of existence. This book is essential for anyone seeking to delve into the complexities of human nature and society. Nietzsche's incisive critique encourages readers to reflect on their own values and aspirations, making "The Greatest Works" not merely a philosophical text but a transformative invitation to self-discovery. It is a must-read for scholars, philosophers, and curious minds alike.

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874 - 1922) was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic.
During the second expedition, from 1907 to 1909, he and three companions established a new record for the “farthest South latitude,” which was 97 miles from the South Pole and the closest in pole exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano on Antarctica. For these achievements, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.
A few years later, his ship - The Endurance - became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice, then launching their lifeboats to reach the inhabited island of South Georgia, a stormy ocean voyage of 720 nautical miles. It became Shackleton's most famous exploit.

    Are We Bodies or Souls?

What are humans? What makes us who we are?

Many think that we are just complicated machines, or animals that are different from machines only by being conscious. In Are We Bodies or Souls? Richard Swinburne comes to the defense of the soul and presents new philosophical arguments that are supported by modern neuroscience. When scientific advances enable neuroscientists to transplant a part of brain into a new body, he reasons, no matter how much we can find out about their brain activity or conscious experiences we will never know whether the resulting person is the same as before or somebody entirely new. Swinburne thus argues that we are immaterial souls sustained in existence by our brains. Sensations, thoughts, and intentions are conscious events in our souls that cause events in our brains. While scientists might discover some of the laws of nature that determine conscious events and brain events, each person's soul is an individual thing and this is what ultimately makes us who we are.
