Sinossi

Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Birth of Tragedy" serves as a profound exploration of the duality inherent in art, contrasting the Apollonian and Dionysian elements within classical Greek tragedy. With a style that blends philosophical discourse with aesthetic critique, Nietzsche marshals a rich tapestry of references to ancient Greek culture, illuminating how art embodies the tension between order and chaos. This seminal work emerges from the backdrop of burgeoning 19th-century existential thought, positioning itself against the emerging nihilism of his time, thus advocating for a resurgence of the life-affirming forces found in artistic expression. Nietzsche, a German philosopher, was deeply influenced by his classical education and personal struggles with despair, which propelled him to investigate the foundational nature of existence and meaning. His early connections with Richard Wagner and exploration of Greek tragedies led him to articulate how art, especially tragedy, can serve as a compelling antidote to the void left by a disenchanted worldview. This inquiry reflects Nietzsche's desire to foster a more vibrant appreciation for the complexities of human experience. Readers are invited to engage with "The Birth of Tragedy" not merely as a theoretical text but as a call to embrace the chaotic beauty of life through art. This work is essential for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of tragedy and its relevance in confronting contemporary nihilism.

In the 1982 State of the Union address on January 26, 1982, Reagan invokes his self-deprecating humor and calls for “a new spirit of partnership between this Congress and this administration”. Reagan cites the “stagflation” of the 1970s: double digit inflation, interest rates over 21%, and over 8 million unemployed.
Reagan notes economic improvement and calls for reduced federal spending, further tax reductions, and fewer regulations, saying our economic problems “are the inheritance of decades of tax and tax and spend and spend.”
Reagan calls for dismantling the Departments of Energy and Education but keeping a reliable safety net for those in need by rooting out waste and fraud in the food stamp, Medicare, and Medicaid programs. Reagan decries the growth in federal grant programs to state and local governments and calls for major reforms.
A short paragraph was lost at 23:15 of the Ronald Reagan presidential library recording. The missing words can be seen in the text version.
In meetings with foreign leaders, Reagan “spoke of the strength of the free marketplace system and how that system could help them realize their aspirations for economic development and political freedom.” Reagan endorses sanctions against the Soviet Union for its actions in Poland and Afghanistan, and urges “that we rebuild our defenses.”
Reagan concludes with a call to work together to preserve “the sacred flame of liberty -- this last, best hope of man on Earth.” This address followed the assassination attempt and the applause at the start and end was extensive.

    Foolproof - Why Misinformation...

    Sander van der Linden

From fake news to conspiracy theories, from inflammatory memes to misleading headlines, misinformation has swiftly become the defining problem of our era. The crisis threatens the integrity of our democracies, our ability to cultivate trusting relationships, even our physical and psychological well-being—yet most attempts to combat it have proven insufficient.

With remarkable clarity, Sander van der Linden explains why our brains are so vulnerable to misinformation. Like a virus, misinformation infects our minds, exploiting shortcuts in how we see and process information to alter our beliefs, modify our memories, and replicate at astonishing rates. Once the virus takes hold, it's very hard to cure.

But we aren't helpless. As van der Linden shows based on award-winning original research, we can cultivate immunity through the innovative science of "prebunking": inoculating people against false information by preemptively exposing them to a weakened dose, thus empowering them to identify and fend off its manipulative tactics. Deconstructing the characteristic techniques of conspiracies and misinformation, van der Linden gives listeners practical tools to defend themselves and others against nefarious persuasion—whether at scale or around their own dinner table.
