The wartime interest in Greenland was a direct result of its vital strategic position—if you wanted to predict the weather in Europe, you had to have men in place on the vast, frozen island. The most celebrated example of Greenland's crucial contribution to Allied meteorological services is the correct weather forecast in June 1944 leading to the decision to launch the invasion of Normandy. In addition, both before and after D-Day a stream of weather reports from Greenland was essential for the Allied ability to carry out the bombing offensive against Germany. The Germans were aware of the value of Greenland from a meteorological point of view, and they repeatedly attempted to establish semi-permanent weather stations along the sparsely populated east coast of the island. This resulted in an epic cat-and-mouse game, in which US Coast Guard personnel assisted by a celebrated sledge patrol manned by Scandinavian adventurers struggled to locate and eliminate German bases before they could make any difference. It's a story seldom told, but the fact remains that Greenland was the only part of the North American continent in which German troops maintained a presence throughout almost the entirety of the war.Mostra libro

Talking Down The Clock is Seamus Cashman's fifth volume of poetry. It follows his 2015 ekphrastic book-length poem, The Sistine Gaze, from which this following quotation is taken: "We are lovers of the earth, not its spouses bound or bought. We are siblings of the stars, sating history's well. Lovers live in beauty's orbit, bypassing time. We change words to love all over again; we mould our shadows with pigments; we make alternatives." (Verse 130, The Sistine Gaze) Cashman Appreciated that TIME was the key challenge, and ventured two poetic sequences, intending to follow where they might lead. These sequences, 'Notebook Exits' and 'Daily Breaks', find time becoming a circus master and cracking the whip daily. Between these sequences are poems for young readersm and lyrics of people, places and sorrow each reflecting Palestine's endurance. In his early collections there was a focis on village life and personal mythologies, the poet found 'fire crackling faggots / at my feet / I inhaled it's fragrance / and forgave myself. / I still could see.'. Now he seeks within, threading the ordinary through the abstract, linking the human via buttonholes of experience, philosophy and the uncertain, clearly enjoying what is encountered enroute. He relishes experiment, as in 'To The Naked Women In The Far Window', 'Be Still', 'Owl', 'Composition', 'Fractalities', 'Catastrophe Turnings' and others. This collection's title poem is a spiral of excitement and image, leading readers through time's impositions and confusions – seeking to seize and to size it, facing the impossibility of ignoring it. Despite the strides made in understanding ancient history, there are obvious difficulties in assessing what ancient societies ate and drank, even as advances in technology continue to open up new methods of analysis for food deposits in human remains and archaeological sites. In general, the majority of what ancient individuals ate did not last long, but it’s clear that the fundamental necessity to secure basic food requirements colored all aspects of life, including politics, and only societies that produced enough food to achieve a surplus could turn their attention to matters other than simple survival. For example, one of the most noteworthy things about Egypt was the grain production there, and that was the context in which the Egyptians’ advancements in art, culture, and science became possible. Since food is a biological necessity for everyone, eating and drinking are often at the very center of social life. This was no different in ancient Greece, but, if anything, the social importance placed on food and wine in the Greek world was even more pronounced and had profound consequences for the rest of the world. As one modern historian aptly put it, “How classical Athens was fed is not a matter of marginal importance. Nothing less than the material base of a brilliant civilization is at issue.” Indeed, it was through the ability to create a food surplus that the ancient Greeks were able to establish their poleis and, from these, go on to develop the political and social structures that built the backbone of Western Civilization. Indulgence is at the heart of modern perceptions of eating and drinking for the ancient Romans. The majority of primary sources depicting food and drink that have survived show rich patricians reclining at a table loaded with exotic foods, and Roman diners are often depicted as gorging themselves over numerous courses served over many hours.Mostra libro
