What happens in Vegas, slays in Vegas.
With a show to produce and my career as an actress on the line, I really don’t have time to die—especially violently. However, while that might not be on my agenda, it seems to be on other’s.
    Awesome.
Instead of acting in my latest endeavor, I’m playing the real-life role of Reluctant Demon Who Has To Save The World—or at the very least, the hot hero.
Fine. I’m always up for a plot twist or a re-write.
Scene One—Save Abaddon from the evil clutches of the hideous Pandora.Scene Two—Don’t die.Scene Three—Avoid Pandora like the plague. I understand she has an evil box …Scene Four—Do not die.Scene Five—Possibly meet my mom, the woman who abandoned me as a baby.Scene Six—Do Not Freaking Die.Scene Seven—Go back to my non-deadly life and win a damn Emmy for Ass The World Turns.
Even though I’m living on the edge of evil, half insanity, half upheaval, I’m a pro and the show must go on.
As the saying goes, a bad dress rehearsal means I don’t get dismembered on opening night. Or something like that.
    It’s showtime, folks.

“Almost every graduating class had a girl who disappeared …”A long-closed home for “fallen women” is the site of horrors old and new in this historical thriller from the author of The Botanist’s Daughter.1949: During the coldest winter Seattle has seen in decades, pregnant sixteen-year-old Brigid Ryan arrives at Fairmile, a home for “fallen women” run by the Catholic Church on a remote island in Puget Sound. She and her baby will disappear before the snow melts. 2013: Ex-cop Frankie Gray is escaping a career in ruins and hoping to reconnect with her teenage daughter, Izzy, while summering with her mother at The Fairmile Inn, soon to be a boutique hotel. But when an elderly nun who worked at the home in its former iteration is found dead in suspicious circumstances and then a tiny skeleton is discovered on the grounds nearby, Frankie goes looking for answers. Then Izzy disappears, and as Frankie races to find her, she turns up a secret that will force her to question her own history and the identity she thought she knew. Over sixty years separate the disappearances at the Fairmile, but Frankie suspects that they may share the same dark root; in the suspenseful, atmospheric investigation that follows, she finds that the truth is as foggy as the rocky, isolated island on which that darkness thrived. Atmospheric, compelling, and filled with unexpected twists, The Only Child is an engrossing mystery that turns an unflinching eye at one of the most important social issues not only of the present day, but of earlier eras as well.

November 1866: The grisly murder site in London's East End is thronged with onlookers. None of them expect the calmly efficient young woman among them to be a medical doctor, arrived to examine the corpse. Inspector Richard Tennant, overseeing the investigation, at first makes no effort to disguise his skepticism. But Dr. Julia Lewis is accustomed to such condescension . . .

To study medicine, Julia had to leave Britain, where universities still bar their doors to women, and travel to America. She returned home to work in her grandfather's practice—and to find London in the grip of a devastating cholera epidemic. In four years, however, she has seen nothing quite like this—a local clergyman's body sexually mutilated and displayed in a manner that she—and Tennant—both suspect is personal.

Days later, another body is found with links to the first, and Tennant calls in Dr. Lewis again. The murderer begins sending the police taunting letters and tantalizing clues—though the trail leads in multiple directions. Lewis and Tennant struggle to understand the killer's dark obsessions and motivations. But there is new urgency, for the doctor's role appears to have shifted from expert to target. And this killer is no impulsive monster, but a fiendishly calculating opponent, determined to see his plan through to its terrifying conclusion . . .

A MOST GRAVE RITUAL. In 1649, King Charles I escaped from the palace in which he was being held prisoner and made a desperate run for Southampton, hoping to reach safety on the Continent. He never made it and was returned to face trial and execution. This much we know. But what did he do along the way south? Did he stop at a castle of one of his loyal royalists? Did he leave behind a vast fortune that he had taken from the Royal Treasury? No one knows for sure.

Or do they? The Musgrave family now owns the old castle and the great manor house beside it. The patriarch of the family dies in the graveyard and the locals believe that the headless ghost of the king did him in. The police accuse his son of murdering him so he could claim the fortune. Sherlock Holmes is hired to exonerate the lad. You would never guess what happens next.

The original Sherlock Holmes story that inspired this one, The Musgrave Ritual, is appended to the paperback edition of this book.
