Beschreibung

More so than the cases themselves, this book is about the people I have met throughout this strange and unique career path. Some have changed my life in profound ways, some have transitioned from clients to friends, a few have tried to kill me, and some I would just as soon forget. But a desire to help people is the fundamental reason for what I have chosen to pursue as a profession. And the reason for writing this book is the hope that, by sharing my experiences, my successes and my failures, my insight, as well as the mistakes I have made along the way, I am able to reach and help others whose paths I may have never otherwise crossed. The question I continue to ask during this journey is the one I have asked myself numerous times throughout my life. What are we here to do?This collection of stories chronicles some of the most interesting, comical, and bizarre cases from my career. But it is also an exploration of my faith journey and how that brought me to the path I am currently navigating. The desire to help others led me to the work that I do, but my faith in Jesus has literally saved my life and lifted me out of the pit of grief and despair. My intention is to provide a message of hope and show that through helping other we help ourselves heal. I endeavored to make the content entertaining, but it is my sincere hope that something in one of the stories may help change your perspective in a meaningful way. Whether that be in opening your heart and mind to the contemplation of your faith, or simply just getting involved in helping other people in whatever way you are able. As crazy as it has been, I love what I do and I hope that comes across on these pages.-Frank Ciatto, the Palm Beach P.I.

Cinder Girl sits in the rarest class of memoir—a towering literary triumph which melds searing and tragic personal history with an incredible story of resilience, hope, and civic success.

Growing up on welfare, food stamps, and Greyhound buses, Holly Thompson Rehder quit school at fifteen to help take care of her mother and younger sister after a devastating car accident. Getting married and pregnant soon thereafter,
like so many other young girls caught in the poverty-cycle, Holly decided that the life she had been born into was not what she intended to give her child.

But unlike others who wind up mired in a lifetime of poverty, dysfunction, and despair, Holly used her resourcefulness, faith, and sheer stubborn American grit to fight her way out of the gutter.

Two decades later she was a successful businesswoman. And today, she is a rising political star who serves as an inspiration to young women across the state of Missouri—and indeed, the entire nation—all while never forgetting where she
came from. She worked her butt off to help so many others born into seemingly helpless circumstances.

As a rare lawmaker who speaks candidly from raw personal experience, in Cinder Girl, Rehder rises above standard political prose to provide an unvarnished look inside the worst of American poverty––those living in the margins. Rehder
challenges us to recall the plight of those far less fortunate, who struggle without the opportunities most of us take for granted.

Did you know that bees have been around for over 100 million years? Or that the Brehon Laws included judgments about the rightful ownership of swarms? And why Irish beekeepers plant bluebells around their hives?
From the perfection of their hexagonal honeycombs to their ordered matriarchal society, bees have been revered for thousands of years.
In this beautifully illustrated book, beekeeper's daughter and student of folklore Eimear Chaomhánach weaves folktales about bees with memories of growing up in a beekeeping household, collecting swarms with her father and learning how to harvest honey.
With legends about Aristotle and Irish saints and accounts of customs such as 'telling the bees', this is a fascinating look at the beliefs and traditions about bees and beekeeping.

Here is Dr. Wernher von Braun’s incredible story – from his early years in Germany, where he gave birth to modern rocketry, to his arrival in the United States and his launching of the first American satellite, the first man on the moon and other stunning space exploration feats. “Every page of Wernher von Braun’s life is a monument to the drama of adventure. Few people have been fighting so hard and, indeed, very few have been subject to so much criticism, so much jealousy, so much defeat—yet, very few have lived to be honored and to harvest the fruits of so many wonderful victories as has this man.” Author Erik Bergaust has had the advantage of knowing von Braun as a friend, hunting and fishing companion, space business associate—and biographer—for more than twenty-five years. Thus, he has been able to present a dramatic portrait of an important personality and a 20th century hero.
