Sinossi

François Rabelais's 'Gargantua & Pantagruel' is a monumental work of French literature, known for its satirical and humorous take on society, education, and human nature. Written in the 16th century, this classic novel consists of five books following the adventures of the giant Gargantua and his son Pantagruel, exploring themes of morality, religion, and the absurdities of the world. Rabelais's unique blend of comedy, philosophy, and folklore makes this work a significant contribution to Renaissance literature. The book is filled with witty wordplay, social commentary, and larger-than-life characters, making it a must-read for those interested in the evolution of literature and the human experience. François Rabelais, a French Renaissance writer and physician, drew upon his extensive knowledge of classical texts, theology, and humanist ideas to craft 'Gargantua & Pantagruel.' His background as a scholar and a man of the world is reflected in the depth and breadth of his writing, which continues to captivate readers centuries later. Rabelais's bold and imaginative approach to storytelling sets him apart as a literary giant of his time. I highly recommend 'Gargantua & Pantagruel' to anyone with a love for classic literature, satire, and thought-provoking content. Rabelais's masterful storytelling and profound insights into the human condition make this work a timeless masterpiece worthy of exploration and appreciation.

With Ash On Their Faces - Yezidi...

Cathy Otten tells the story of the ISIS attacks, the mass enslavements of Yezidi women and the fallout from the disaster. She challenges common perceptions of Yezidi female victimhood by focusing on stories of resistance passed down by generations.
ISIS's genocidal attack on the Yezidi population in northern Iraq in 2014 brought the world's attention to the small faith that numbers less than one million worldwide. That summer ISIS massacred Yezidi men and enslaved women and children. More than one hundred thousand Yezidis were besieged on Sinjar Mountain. The US began airstrikes to roll back ISIS, citing a duty to save the Yezidis, but the genocide is still ongoing.
The headlines have moved on but thousands of Yezidi women and children remain in captivity, and many more are still displaced. Sinjar is now free from ISIS but the Yezidi homeland is at the centre of growing tensions amongst the city's liberators, making returning home for the Yezidis almost impossible.
The mass abduction of Yezidi women and children is here conveyed with extraordinary intensity in the first-hand reporting of a young journalist who has been based in Iraqi Kurdistan for the past four years, covering the war with ISIS and its impact on the people of the country.
Yezidi women describe how, in the recent conflict, they followed the tradition of their ancestors who, a century ago during persecutions at the fall of the Ottoman empire, put ash on their faces to make themselves unattractive and try to avoid being raped.
Today, over 3,000 Yezidi women and girls remain in the Caliphate where they are bought and sold, and passed between fighters as chattel. But many other have escaped or been released. Otten bases her book on interviews with these survivors, as well as those who smuggled them to safety, painstakingly piecing together their accounts of enslavement. Their deeply moving personal narratives bring alive a human tragedy.

Most bereavement materials are focused on the first year of the grieving experience. We have often been asked, "What do you have for after the first anniversary?" In response to this need, Doug Manning has written this book, Grief's Second Mile: Life Beyond the First Year.
Grief's Second Mile addresses some of the specific losses such as the death after extended illness, death of a child, suicide, violent or unresolved deaths, and why those may lengthen or stall the person's ability to approach the necessary transitions of grief in a healthy or complete manner. He provides insights and suggestions for developing ways to express feelings and cope with the loss and how to seek the help that is vital. Doug focuses on allowing the reader to feel "normal" in their search and to discover the answers that are right for them.
A valuable resource for those families who are struggling or would appreciate something that speaks to their grieving beyond the first year.

The Contest for the Indian Ocean...

A major new examination of the Indian Ocean, revealing how the region has become a hotly contested geopolitical flashpoint

Throughout history, the Indian Ocean has been an essential space for trade, commerce, and culture. Every European power has sought to dominate it. Now, after a lull in the postwar period, control of major shipping routes has once again become a critical aspect of every rising state's ambition to be a global power.

Darshana M. Baruah shows how governments from Washington, DC, to Nairobi and Canberra are expanding their interests in the region. The Indian Ocean is resource rich, strategically placed, and home to over two billion people. Island nations have become more important than ever, with Madagascar forming ties with Russia and the Comoros with Saudi Arabia. It is also through the region that China engages with Africa and the Middle East. This is a compelling account of the geopolitical significance of the Indian Ocean—showing how the region has taken center stage in a new global contest.
