Sinossi

A classic picaresque novel, Francisco de Quevedo's "The Spanish Sharper" chronicles the adventures of Don Pablos, a buscón or swindler, who aims in life to learn virtue and to become a caballero, or gentleman, both of which he fails miserably at. The work is a notable piece of satire that criticizes not only Spanish society but the protagonist Pablos himself. His ambition to elevate his status to that of a gentleman is, in Quevedo's opinion, unobtainable; as such aspirations from the lower classes would only destabilize the social order. Written around 1604 and first published in Spanish as "El Buscón" in 1626, "The Spanish Sharper" stands as one of the earliest and premier examples of the popular genre of Spanish literature known as the picaresque novel.

The Top Ten - Katherine Mansfield - An Introduction

Katherine Mansfield was a mistress of the short story form. Her stories often start with what seems like an abrupt interruption into peoples lives yet, within a sentence or two, we are wholly at home in these new settings. Her tragic early death deprived us of untold glories but those she left behind sparkle and radiate with an energy that few others have matched.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

British author Kenneth Grahame, during his brief career, managed to create two of the world's most beloved children's stories: the classic tale "The Wind in the Willows" and the novella "The Reluctant Dragon," each one a magnificent addition to any collection. Here, these two famous stories are combined into one volume, presented in their original and unabridged format. First, Grahame's sprawling saga of life in the English countryside, "The Wind in the Willows," featuring the sensible and amiable Mole, the fiery and whip-smart Water Rat, the gruff and respectable Badger as well as the irrepressible and out-of-control Toad of Toad Hall, whose mad and impulsive behavior drives him to obsession, thievery, prison and escape! There are few more cherished children's books in the history of literature. As an added bonus, however, we also include Grahame's story of friendship, love and compassion, the beautiful and elegiac novella "The Reluctant Dragon," wherein the main character - the Boy - discovers a friendly dragon living outside his small village. When the villagers learn of the dragon's existence, they recruit St. George himself to slay the monster, prompting the Boy to intervene and try to save his friend. A beautiful fable of love and friendship for children of all ages.
