Sinossi

In "The Complete Horror Books of F. Marion Crawford," the intricate interplay of psychological depth and supernatural themes manifests within a collection that showcases Crawford's adept mastery of horror fiction. Each tale, penned under the umbrella of Gothic tradition, intertwines vivid narratives with a haunting atmosphere, exploring the shadowy corridors of the human psyche and the abysmal unknown. This anthology encapsulates the late 19th and early 20th-century literary context, positioning Crawford alongside contemporaries like Henry James and H.P. Lovecraft, showcasing his unique ability to evoke dread through elegant prose. Francis Marion Crawford, an author born into a literary tradition as the son of a prominent American writer, drew upon his profound knowledge of European culture and the macabre to shape his storytelling. His extensive travels, deep engagement with folklore, and fascination with the darker aspects of human experience profoundly influenced his writing. Crawford's own personal encounters with the supernatural also sparked much of the eerie ambiance found throughout the collection, inviting readers into a realm where terror lurks just beneath the surface of reality. For those intrigued by the intersection of literary artistry and the chilling elements of horror, "The Complete Horror Books of F. Marion Crawford" is an essential addition. It presents a rich tapestry of stories that not only entertain but also provoke thought on the nature of fear itself. Readers will find themselves captivated by Crawford'Äôs ability to transport them to realms where the boundaries of reality and the supernatural blur, making this collection a must-read for aficionados of classic horror.

A queer paranormal horror novel in the style of showrunner Mike Flannagan, showing the complex real-life terror inherent in grief and mental illness

After the tragic death of their father and surviving a life-threatening eating disorder, 18-year-old Ellis moves with their mother to the small town of Black Stone, seeking a simpler life and some space to recover. But Black Stone feels off; it’s a disquieting place surrounded by towns with some of the highest death rates in the country. It doesn’t help that everyone says Ellis’s new house is haunted — everyone including Quinn, a local girl who has quickly captured Ellis's attention. And Ellis has started to believe what people are saying: they see pulsing veins in their bedroom walls and specters in dark corners of the cellar. Together, Ellis and Quinn dig deep into Black Stone’s past and soon discover that their town, and Ellis’s house in particular, is the battleground in a decades-long spectral war, one that will claim their family — and the town — if it’s allowed to continue.

Withered is queer psychological horror, a compelling tale of heartache, loss, and revenge that tackles important issues of mental health in the way that only horror can: by delving deep into them, cracking them open, and exposing their gruesome entrails.

The story traces the history of the titular street in a New England city, presumably Boston, from its first beginnings as "but a path" in colonial times to a quasi-supernatural occurrence in the years immediately following World War I. As the city grows up around the street, it is planted with many trees and built along with "simple, beautiful houses of brick and wood", each with a rose garden. As the Industrial Revolution runs its course, the area degenerates into a run-down and polluted slum, with all of the street's old houses falling into disrepair.
After World War I and the October Revolution, the area becomes home to a community of Russian immigrants. Among the new residents is the leadership of a "vast band of terrorists," who are plotting the destruction of the United States on Independence Day. When the day arrives, the terrorists gather to do the deed, but before they can get started, all the houses in the street collapse concurrently on top of each other, killing them all. Observers at the scene testify that immediately after the collapse, they experienced visions of the trees and rose gardens that had once been in the street.
