Sinossi

What Is Script Theory

The Script Theory is a psychological theory that postulates that the majority of human behavior can be categorized into patterns that are referred to as "scripts" because these patterns work similarly to that of a written script, which is to say that they provide a program for action. Because the purely biological response of affect may be followed by awareness and by what we cognitively do in terms of acting on that affect, Silvan Tomkins realized that more was required to produce a complete explanation of what he called "human being theory." As a result, he created script theory as a further development of his affect theory, which regards human beings' emotional responses to stimuli as falling into categories called "affects." Script theory regards human beings' emotional responses to stimuli as falling into categories called "affects."

Today there is no place on Earth that does not harbor invasive exotic species. Invasive plants and animals can be found on every continent, including Antarctica, and within all waterbodies, including all oceans. In our increasingly connected world, with speedy commercial and recreational travel and the global movement of biological matter for food, invasive species are showing up at such a fast rate that there is no way to accurately count how many currently exist or how many are likely to emerge in the coming decades. Monitoring these species and controlling their spread is essential, as we increasingly understand the negative impacts they pose: their threat to our health; the toll they take on our commercial production; and the threat they pose to native ecosystems.

This Very Short Introduction provides a clear definition of an invasive species, and considers the myriad ways they are moved around the globe, and the ecological, social, and economic impacts they often impose. Exploring the way Earth's biodiversity is being affected by global change, Julie Lockwood also discusses policy and management approaches to combating the ill-effects of invasive species, and how invasive species fit within the broader context of environmental change.

“Without Our Consent” is a trailblazing story on pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides from his own experience and allergies to these chemicals. An immense amount of research has been used to paint a picture of abundance use by agriculture and livestock farming in the USA. Researching this topic our author Bob Skerstonas has provided us with a wealth of information backing this up with over 395 footnotes for a reader to dig deeper into the overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. 90% of the US population has detectable concentrations of pesticides or their metabolites in their urine or blood samples.Pesticides have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cancer, birth defects, and hormonal imbalances.Farmworkers and pesticide applicators are particularly at risk of pesticide exposure and related health problems.

Have you met a true hero? We’ve all read about truly bad people. Why do some people do good while others choose evil? Are we responsible for our actions? What impact do genetics and upbringing have on moral choices? What does science show us about altruism, prejudice, authority, and group influence? You will explore these and many other provocative questions in Professor Catherine A. Sanderson’s 15-lecture audio course, The Psychology of Good and Evil. An award-winning psychology professor and celebrated author, Prof. Sanderson is known for her deep knowledge of current research as well as her humorous and engaging teaching style. This course is characteristic of her oeuvre: well-crafted, carefully articulated, thoroughly researched, and targeted to our historical moment. Throughout the course, Prof. Sanderson alludes to the social ills and global conflicts that you hear about on the nightly news. Her elucidation of research from the fields of psychology, biology, and neuroscience will also help you put names to the positive and negative behavioral phenomena you’ve experienced in your own life. Early on, you’ll learn how scientists define the notions of good and evil—concepts that are prone to oversimplification. From there, you’ll explore complex and fascinating questions about the predictors of such behavior. The knowledge you’ll glean this course will help you better understand yourself and the society in which you live. This course is part of the Learn25 collection and includes a free PDF study guide.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative forces of the 21st century, revolutionizing industries, economies, and even societies. Its capabilities have extended far beyond the realm of science fiction, introducing tools that can analyze vast amounts of data, predict outcomes, and perform tasks with unprecedented efficiency. Yet, as with any powerful technology, the rapid development of AI also raises profound ethical, social, and economic questions, creating a paradox that we must carefully navigate.

At its core, AI is a reflection of human ambition: the desire to push the boundaries of what is possible and to solve complex problems that were once beyond our reach. From self-driving cars to medical diagnosis systems, AI has the potential to greatly enhance human life. In healthcare, for example, AI is helping doctors diagnose diseases with greater accuracy, while in education, personalized learning systems are adapting to the needs of individual students. AI can streamline processes, optimize productivity, and unlock innovations that would have seemed impossible just decades ago.

However, as AI becomes more integrated into daily life, the darker aspects of its potential also come to the forefront. The very features that make AI so useful—its ability to process data at speeds far exceeding human capacity—also pose risks. One of the most pressing concerns is privacy. With AI's increasing ability to collect and analyze vast amounts of personal data, questions arise about who owns this data and how it is being used. From facial recognition technologies to predictive algorithms, AI systems can potentially infringe on our privacy and autonomy in ways that were previously unimaginable.

    Saving Ourselves - From Climate...

We've known for decades that climate change is an existential crisis. For just as long, we've seen the complete failure of our institutions to rise to the challenge. Fossil fuel interests maintain a stranglehold on political and economic power. Even though we have seen growing concern from everyday people, civil society has succeeded only in pressuring decision makers to adopt watered-down policies. Is there any hope of achieving the systemic change we need?

Dana R. Fisher argues that there is a realistic path forward for climate action—but only through mass mobilization that responds to the growing severity and frequency of disastrous events. She assesses the current state of affairs and shows why public policy and private-sector efforts have been ineffective. Spurred by this lack of progress, climate activism has become increasingly confrontational. Fisher examines the radical flank of the climate movement: its emergence and growth, its use of direct action, and how it might evolve as the climate crisis worsens. She considers when and how activism is most successful, identifying the importance of creating community, capitalizing on shocking moments, and cultivating resilience. Clear-eyed yet optimistic, Saving Ourselves offers timely insights on how social movements can take power back and open windows of opportunity for transformative climate action.

Six Interesting Facts about the Heart
    1. Heart and circulatory diseases cause a quarter of all deaths in the UK, that’s more than 170,000 deaths each year – an average of 480 deaths each day or one every three minutes in the UK⁵.
    2. There are around 7.6 million people living with a heart or circulatory disease in the UK: 4 million men and 3.6 million women⁵.
    3. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease. It is the most common cause of heart attack and was the single biggest killer of both men and women worldwide in 2019⁵.
    4. In the US, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups¹. One person dies every 33 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease¹.
    5. About 695,000 people in the United States died from heart disease in 2021—that’s 1 in every 5 deaths¹.
    6. The most common type of heart disease in the USA is coronary artery disease (CAD), in which the major blood vessels to the heart become narrow or blocked with cholesterol and fatty build-up. CAD affects 18.2 million adults, and shockingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that every two in ten deaths from CAD happen in people under 65 years old².
