Summary

What Is Process Mining

Process mining is a collection of approaches that relates the fields of data science and process management to support the study of operational processes based on event logs. These techniques were developed to help companies improve their business processes. The objective of process mining is to derive insights and take appropriate action from event data. The availability of event data and the aspiration to achieve process improvement are the driving forces behind process mining, which is an essential component of data science. The approaches of process mining make use of event data in order to demonstrate what individuals, machines, and organizations are actually doing. Process mining gives fresh insights that may be utilized to determine the execution paths taken by operational processes and address the performance and compliance concerns that are caused by these processes.

Edward O. Wilson recalls his lifetime with ants, from his first boyhood encounters in the woods of Alabamato perilous journeys into the Brazilian rainforest.“Ants are the most warlike of all animals, with colony pitted against colony,” writes Edward O. Wilson, one ofthe world’s most beloved scientists. “Their clashes dwarf Waterloo and Gettysburg.” In Tales from the Ant World, twotime Pulitzer Prize winner Wilson takes us on a myrmecological tour to such far-flung destinations as Mozambiqueand New Guinea, the Gulf of Mexico’s Dauphin Island, and even his parent’s overgrown urban backyard, thrillinglyrelating his nine-decade-long scientific obsession with many of the Earth’s more than 15,000 ant species.Animating his scientific observations with illuminating personal stories, Wilson homes in on twenty-five antspecies to explain how these genetically superior creatures talk, smell, and taste, and more significantly, belong tocolonies that fight to determine dominance. Wryly observing that “males are little more than flying sperm missiles” orthat ants send their “old ladies” into battle, Wilson eloquently relays his brushes with fire, army, and leafcutter ants, aswell as more exotic species. Among them are the very rare matabele, Africa’s fiercest warrior ants, whose female hunterscan carry up to fifteen termites in their jaw (and, as Wilson reports from personal experience, have an incrediblypainful stinger); Costa Rica’s Basiceros, the slowest of all ants; and New Caledonia’s bull ants, the most endangered ofthem all, which Wilson discovered in 2011 after over twenty years of presumed extinction.Tales from the Ant World is a fascinating, if not occasionally hair-raising, personal account by one of our greatestscientists and a necessary volume for any lover of the natural world

In a time of uncertainty about our environmental future—an eye-opening global tour of some of the most wounded places on earth, and stories of how a passionate group of eco-restorers is leading the way to their revitalization.

Award-winning science journalist Judith D. Schwartz takes us first to China’s Loess Plateau, where a landmark project has successfully restored a blighted region the size of Belgium, lifting millions of people out of poverty. She journeys on to Norway, where a young indigenous reindeer herder challenges the most powerful orthodoxies of conservation—and his own government. And in the Middle East, she follows the visionary work of an ambitious young American as he attempts to re-engineer the desert ecosystem, using plants as his most sophisticated technology.

Schwartz explores regenerative solutions across a range of landscapes: deserts, grasslands, tropics, tundra, Mediterranean. She also highlights various human landscapes, the legacy of colonialism and industrial agriculture, and the endurance of indigenous knowledge.

The Reindeer Chronicles demonstrates how solutions to seemingly intractable problems can come from the unlikeliest of places, and how the restoration of local water, carbon, nutrient, and energy cycles can play a dramatic role in stabilizing the global climate. Ultimately, it reveals how much is in our hands if we can find a way to work together and follow nature’s lead.
