    Dividing Lines - How...

    Deborah N. Archer

Our nation's transportation system is crumbling. But as acclaimed scholar and ACLU president Deborah Archer warns in Dividing Lines, before we can think about rebuilding and repairing, we must consider the role race has played in transportation infrastructure, from the early twentieth century and into the present day.

As Archer demonstrates, the success of the Civil Rights movement and the fall of Jim Crow in the 1960s did not mean the end of segregation. With state-sanctioned racism no longer legal, officials across the country turned to transportation infrastructure to keep Americans divided. A wealthy white neighborhood could no longer be "protected" by racial covenants and segregated shops, but a multilane road, with no pedestrian crossings, could be built along its border to make it difficult for people from a lower-income community to visit. Highways could not be routed through Black neighborhoods based on the race of their residents, but those neighborhoods' lower property values—a legacy of racial exclusion—could justify their destruction.

Drawing on a wealth of sources, including interviews with people who now live in the shadow of highways and other major infrastructure projects, Archer presents a sweeping, national account—from Atlanta and Houston to Indianapolis and New York City—of our persistent divisions.

The real story about how to be a successful seller on Amazon, from a leading consultant. Amazon is the most powerful business incubator in the history of the world. Unfortunately, where there is great opportunity, get-rich-quick schemes abound. Most available books about selling on Amazon peddle a dream that is unattainable for sellers. They promise riches at the cost of only five hours a week, or a long-term income for an initial investment of just $1,000. The Amazon Incubator is different. This book instead offers realistic, sustainable strategies for building a long-term, profitable business on Amazon. Whether sellers are burgeoning entrepreneurs or own the ecommerce channel at an established brand, they will benefit from the strategic thinking and in-depth Amazon know-how delivered in an easily digestible format. The reader will be guided through exercises to define their goals, determine their product set, and execute like a champ. The Amazon Incubator is written in short, easy-to-digest chapters that include case studies and real-world examples of Amazon seller success and failure. Readers will better identify with and understand the information when case studies are included. In addition, each chapter includes a brief summary at the end, as well as suggested action steps, so it can easily be used as a tool for the reader to share with teammates and business associates.

The amazing true story of the man behind modern weather predictionConsider a world without weather prediction. How would we know when to evacuate communities ahead of fires or floods, or figure out what to wear tomorrow? Until 40 years ago, we couldn’t forecast weather conditions beyond ten days. Renowned climate scientist Dr. Jagadish Shukla is largely to thank for modern weather forecasting. Born in rural India with no electricity, plumbing, or formal schools, he attended classes that were held in a cow shed. Shukla grew up amid turmoil: overwhelming monsoons, devastating droughts, and unpredictable crop yields. His drive brought him to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, despite little experience. He then followed an unlikely path to MIT and Princeton, and the highest echelons of climate science. His work, which has enabled us to predict weather farther into the future than previously thought possible, allows us to feed more people, save lives, and hold on to hope in a warming world.Paired with his philanthropic endeavors and extreme dedication to the field, Dr. Shukla has been lauded internationally for his achievements, including a shared Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore for his governmental research on climate change. A Billion Butterflies is a wondrous insider’s account of climate science and an unbelievable memoir of his life. Understanding dynamical seasonal prediction will change the way you experience a thunderstorm or interpret a forecast; understanding its origins and the remarkable story of the man who discovered it will change the way you see our world.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Dr. David Satcher is one of the most widely known and well-regarded physicians of our time. A former four-star admiral in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he served as the assistant secretary for health, the surgeon general of the United States, and the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before founding the eponymous Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine. At the core of his impact on public health, he is also a lifelong leader for civil rights and health equity.

In My Quest for Health Equity, Dr. Satcher takes an inspiring and instructive look inside his fifty-year career to shed light on the challenge and burden of leadership. Explaining that he has thought of each leadership role—whether in academia, community, or government—as an opportunity to move the needle toward health equity, he shares the hard-won lessons he has learned over a lifetime in the medical field.

Drawing on his early memories, medical school days, and experience in the civil rights movement, Dr. Satcher touches on a number of topics, including the essential qualities of leadership; leading from science to policy to practice; the importance of clear communication and continual learning; the need for workplace discipline; confronting failure; team approaches to leadership; and much more.
