Sinossi

What is Cost Curve

In economics, a cost curve is a graph of the costs of production as a function of total quantity produced. In a free market economy, productively efficient firms optimize their production process by minimizing cost consistent with each possible level of production, and the result is a cost curve. Profit-maximizing firms use cost curves to decide output quantities. There are various types of cost curves, all related to each other, including total and average cost curves; marginal cost curves, which are equal to the differential of the total cost curves; and variable cost curves. Some are applicable to the short run, others to the long run.

In the 1990s, nobody in Russia stood above Boris Berezovsky – not even the President of Russia. He built his estimated fortune of $40bn with interests in oil, media, banking, and aviation by cutting deals with bureaucrats and fellow businessmen, rapidly intimidating and charming his way to wealth. After a change of guard in the Kremlin in the early 2000s, newly elected President Vladimir Putin began to view his former friend and ally Berezovsky as a billionaire run amok and as a danger to his own power. A clash over media ownership and a subsequent fall from grace followed – Berezovsky, having lost most of his money, fled to the United Kingdom and spent the remainder of his life tied up in courtroom battles over his fortune and sponsoring anti-Putin movements in Russia.Rising from an obscure government mathematician to an all-powerful oligarch, Berezovsky epitomized an era – of shady corridor politics and violent gangster capitalism, of post-Soviet chaos and revolutionized social mores. Before dying in London in 2013 – an apparent suicide in mysterious circumstances – Berezovsky penned this essay as a final stroke of his legacy, detailing his philosophy of money and money-getting.

Moving is no fun. Neither is getting rid of stuff. And both jobs get harder as we get older. So, when those over a certain age—say, in the last third of life—are looking to downsize and move all at the same time, many will conclude, "I'll just stay put, thank you very much." It's not just the acquired possessions holding them back, but also the intangibles. Their memories, their family history, their identities are all in jeopardy, they think. And yet, that reluctance to move on is commonly all that stands between them and a better life.

Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow will help this group of root-bound home dwellers cross the bridge between stuck in the past and a lighter, better future. It will encourage them to embrace the fact that now, when they're no longer tethered to a school system or to a job they need to be near, is their chance to live where they want to live.

Included are enlightening profiles of those who proactively changed their housing in the last third of their life. Whether they moved to a smaller place, remodeled their existing home, or even moved to a larger home; whether they moved to a new city, to a senior community, or to a new home in the same neighborhood, they all reimagined their lives, re-evaluated their belongings, and made a move toward a better and possibly their best life yet.

The Problem with Solutions - Why...

A concise and feisty takedown of the all-style, no-substance tech ventures that fail to solve our food crises.

Why has Silicon Valley become the model for addressing today's myriad social and ecological crises? With this book, Julie Guthman digs into the impoverished solutions for food and agriculture currently emerging from Silicon Valley, urging us to stop trying to fix our broken food system through finite capitalistic solutions and technological moonshots that do next to nothing to actualize a more just and sustainable system.

The Problem with Solutions combines an analysis of the rise of tech company solution culture with findings from actual research on the sector's ill-informed attempts to address the problems of food and agriculture. As this seductive approach continues to infiltrate universities and academia, Guthman challenges us to reject apolitical and self-gratifying techno-solutions and develop the capacity and willingness to respond to the root causes of these crises. Solutions, she argues, are a product of our current condition, not an answer to it.

How underwater mediation has transformed deep-sea spaces into resource-rich frontiers

Green energy technologies such as windmills, solar panels, and electric vehicles may soon depend on material found at the seabed. How did a space once imagined to be empty and unfathomable come to be thought of as a treasure trove of resources? Lisa Yin Han traces how contemporary developments in underwater sensing and imaging materially and imaginatively transmogrify the ocean bottom into a resource frontier capable of sustaining a digitally connected global future.

Set against the backdrop of climate change, energy transition, and the expansion of industrial offshore extractions, Deepwater Alchemy looks at oceanic media and its representation of the seabed in terms of valuable resources. From high-tech simulations to laboratories and archives that collect and analyze sediments, Han explores the media technologies that survey, visualize, and condition the possibility for industrial resource extraction, introducing the concept of extractive mediation to describe the conflations between resource prospecting and undersea knowledge production. Moving away from anthropocentric frameworks, she argues that we must equalize access to deep ocean mediation and include the submerged perspectives of multispecies communities.
