The story of Rome’s rise is one of ambition, resilience, and conquest. What began as a small settlement along the Tiber River grew into one of the most powerful empires in history. Rome’s transformation from a monarchy to a republic and eventually into a sprawling empire was shaped by its military prowess, political strategies, and influential leaders.
Rome’s early history is rooted in legend. According to myth, the city was founded in 753 BCE by Romulus, who, after a dispute, killed his twin brother Remus. While this tale is shrouded in mystery, archaeological evidence suggests that settlements on the Palatine Hill date back much earlier. Initially ruled by kings, Rome transitioned to a republic in 509 BCE after the overthrow of the last Etruscan monarch, Tarquin the Proud. This shift established a new political system that placed power in the hands of elected officials, most notably the Senate and the consuls.
The Republic’s success was largely due to its military strength. The Roman legions were highly disciplined and adaptable, allowing Rome to expand its influence across the Italian Peninsula. Through a combination of warfare and strategic alliances, Rome defeated neighboring city-states and incorporated them into its growing domain. One of its defining moments came during the Punic Wars against Carthage (264–146 BCE), where figures like Scipio Africanus led Rome to decisive victories, securing its dominance over the Mediterranean.

While the book rests on the backbone of the Vietnam experience, it aspires to go beyond the confines of that particular war and lead the reader to question an American foreign policy that has, especially since 2001, been militarily driven. The harm done to American and allied soldiers and to the indigent peoples and societies of the countries the U.S. has so thoughtlessly invaded has secured no advantage to the U.S. or any other country. The author delves into the human physical and psychological cost of war and implicitly makes the case for diplomacy over force, restraint, and modesty over hubris. He establishes the importance of cause to the combatant's ability to fight winningly and to remain psychologically sound in battle and afterward. It is especially relevant today because it connects the human and societal consequences of the decisions made in and around that war with the recent squandered ventures in the Middle East.

Twelve American women serving in the military share their gripping personal stories of combat in Iraq. In Iraq, the front lines are everywhere—and everywhere in Iraq, no matter what their job descriptions say, women in the U.S. military are fighting. More than 155,000 of them have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003—four times the number of women sent to Desert Storm in 1991. More than 430 have been wounded and over seventy killed—almost twice the number of American women killed in action in Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm combined. But should women be in combat? Do they have what it takes to be warriors? Compelling questions once, but now empty because, more than ever, American women are in combat, and they are warriors. The real question is: What are their experiences of war? We haven’t heard their stories—until now. Band of Sisters presents a dozen groundbreaking and often heart-wrenching stories of American women in combat in Iraq, such as the U.S.’s first female pilot to be shot down and survive, the military’s first black female pilot in combat, a young turret gunner defending convoys, and a nurse struggling to save lives, including her own. As one female service member said, “We love our country as much as any man, and we have made the same sacrifices as our brothers in arms.” Band of Sisters reveals those sacrifices for the first time. WARNING
Your life can be drastically affected by the content of this book.
It reveals the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Firstly, you, whoever you are, only have one life; whether you like it or not, this is it. This life is all there is; when it is exhausted, there is no more. It is not a dress rehearsal before the act; it is the act. When you die, you will vanish into infinite nothingness for all eternity. Secondly, you only have one duty in this life, and that duty is to be yourself. That is the person you genuinely are outside the contamination of your past conditioning. It is the only way to fulfil your potential. Thirdly, you only have one purpose for this life: to live your life fully. You are the ultimate being in your universe; as such, you are entitled to and should accept nothing less than a life lived fully. Fourthly, an essential requirement for achieving such a life is to make it about you and what matters to you. Make you the centre of your life. Fifthly, to achieve this type of life you must learn what life is, who you are, how you fit into life and, above all else, how to make the most of this position to achieve your full potential. The journey towards gaining this knowledge begins in the first chapter of this book.

In the winter of 1910, the river that brought life to Paris quickly became a force of destruction. Torrential rainfall saturated the soil, and faulty engineering created a perfect storm of conditions that soon drowned Parisian streets, homes, businesses, and museums. The city seemed to have lost its battle with the elements. Given the Parisians' history of deep-seated social, religious, and political strife, it was questionable whether they could collaborate to confront the crisis. Yet while the sewers, Métro, and electricity failed around them, Parisians of all backgrounds rallied to save the city and one another. Improvising techniques to keep Paris functioning and braving the dangers of collapsing infrastructure and looters, leaders and residents alike answered the call to action. This newfound ability to work together proved a crucial rehearsal for an even graver crisis four years later, when France was plunged into World War I. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the flood, Jeffrey H. Jackson captures here for the first time the drama and ultimate victory of man over nature.
