Sinossi

What is Anti Aircraft Warfare

Anti-aircraft warfare is the counter to aerial warfare and it includes "all measures designed to nullify or reduce the effectiveness of hostile air action". It includes surface based, subsurface, and air-based weapon systems, associated sensor systems, command and control arrangements, and passive measures. It may be used to protect naval, ground, and air forces in any location. However, for most countries, the main effort has tended to be homeland defence. Missile defence is an extension of air defence, as are initiatives to adapt air defence to the task of intercepting any projectile in flight.

Whether sharing a spectacular shot from a deep-space probe, announcing a development in genetic engineering, or crafting an easy-to-reference list of cancer risk factors, science public information officers, or PIOs, serve as scientific liaisons, connecting academic, nonprofit, government, and other research organizations with the public. And as traditional media outlets cut back on their science coverage, PIOs are becoming a vital source for science news. W. Matthew Shipman’s Handbook for Science Public Information Officers covers all aspects of communication strategy and tactics for members of this growing specialty. It includes how to pitch a story, how to train researchers to navigate interviews, how to use social media effectively, and how to respond to a crisis. The handbook offers a wealth of practical advice while teaching science PIOs how to think critically about what they do and how they do it, so that they will be prepared to take advantage of any situation, rather than being overwhelmed by it. For all science communicators—whether they’re starting their careers, crossing over from journalism or the research community, or professional communicators looking to hone their PIO skills—Shipman’s Handbook for Science Public Information Officers will become their go-to reference.

Mycology - Fungi and Their World

Fungi occupy a unique and essential place in the natural world, forming a biological kingdom distinct from plants, animals, and bacteria. Unlike plants, fungi do not rely on photosynthesis to produce energy, and unlike animals, they do not consume food through ingestion. Instead, they absorb nutrients externally by secreting powerful enzymes that break down organic material. This ability allows fungi to play a crucial role in ecosystems, particularly as decomposers that recycle nutrients back into the environment.
The evolutionary origins of fungi date back over a billion years, with evidence suggesting they share a distant common ancestor with animals. As they evolved, fungi developed an incredible range of adaptations, enabling them to survive in nearly every habitat on Earth. From the depths of the ocean to arid deserts, fungi have found ways to thrive in extreme conditions. Some species form vast underground networks, facilitating communication between plants, while others exist as microscopic spores floating invisibly through the air.
Classifying fungi has been a longstanding challenge due to their vast diversity and complex life cycles. Scientists traditionally grouped fungi based on physical traits and reproductive strategies, but advances in molecular biology have refined their classification. The major phyla of the fungal kingdom include Basidiomycota, which encompasses familiar mushrooms, Ascomycota, which includes yeasts and molds, Zygomycota, known for fast-growing molds, and Glomeromycota, which form essential symbiotic relationships with plant roots. These diverse groups showcase the wide-ranging forms and functions of fungi in nature.

"Slobodchikoff's ground-breaking research" (Jonathan Balcombe) shows us that animals have much to teach us about languageGroundbreaking research has been done teaching animals human language, but what about the other way around? Studies have shown that lizards, squid, monkeys, and birds are talking to each other, communicating information about food, predators, squabbles, and petty jealousies. These animal languages are unique and highly adaptive. By exploring them, we come to appreciate the basis of our own languages; understanding or even "speaking" them allows us to get closer to the other species who inhabit this planet with us. The implications of animals having language are enormous. It has been one of the last bastions separating "us" from "them."Slobodchikoff's studies of the communication system of prairie dogs over twenty-five years have attracted a considerable amount of attention from the media, including a one-hour documentary on his work produced by BBC and Animal Planet. In Chasing Doctor Dolittle, he posits that the difference is one of degree, not the vast intellectual chasm that philosophers have talked about for millennia. Filled with meticulous research, vivid examples and daring conclusions, this book will challenge the reader's assumptions and open up new possibilities of understanding our fellow creatures.

For any sailor, in a yacht or motorboat, the passage from one place to another is relatively easy, particularly with modern navigation equipment. What can be more of a challenge (and a potential source of anxiety for skipper and crew) is the start and end of a passage – how to leave and arrive safely, particularly if it's a cramped marina or crowded anchorage. In Illustrated Seamanship, Ivar Dedekam takes you through the techniques required to achieve a safe departure and arrival. Starting with the fundamentals of ropework he then moves on to manoeuvring, berthing, making fast and then leaving. All types of berthing are covered from coming alongside, stern to, bow to, between finger pontoons and using piles and buoys. There is advice about dealing with different wind and current directions as well as using springs. Ivar then turns to anchoring and offers guidance on setting and weighing anchor in many different circumstances: under sail and under power, using one or two anchors and coping with changes in wind and tide while anchored. You probably won't experience all the scenarios that Ivar so carefully describes, but you will certainly come across quite a few. Knowing what to do when a new situation comes up could be invaluable, increasing your confidence and leading to greater enjoyment and use of your boat. With over 500 diagrams, this slim volume is a perfect reminder of frequently used techniques and could be your get-out-of-jail card when a new circumstance arises. This new edition has an improved layout and the eBook's functionality has been improved significantly.
