Summary

In "Miss Mephistopheles," Fergus Hume deftly weaves a compelling tale that blends elements of mystery, gothic fiction, and social commentary, all wrapped in a rich, descriptive prose style characteristic of late 19th-century literature. The novel intricately explores the themes of ambition, female autonomy, and the moral quandaries faced by its characters, primarily focusing on the titular character, a femme fatale who embodies both allure and danger. Through its vivid settings and complex characters, Hume crafts a narrative that critiques Victorian societal norms while engaging readers with suspenseful plot twists and evocative imagery. Fergus Hume, an Australian author, is best known for his groundbreaking detective fiction, particularly his earlier work, "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab." Having moved to England, Hume was deeply influenced by the literary movements of his time, including gothic romance and realism. "Miss Mephistopheles" reflects his fascination with the darker aspects of human nature and the consequences that arise from unchecked ambition, likely informed by his own experiences navigating the literary world. This novel is highly recommended for readers who appreciate intricately plotted stories rich in psychological depth and moral complexity. Hume's insightful exploration of character dynamics and societal critiques makes "Miss Mephistopheles" a must-read for those intrigued by the intersection of mystery and morality, ensuring a captivating experience for scholars and casual readers alike.

Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards was born on 7th June 1831 in Islington, London. She was educated at home by her mother and showed early promise as a writer, publishing her first poem at the age of 7 and her first story at 12. Thereafter several popular periodicals published her poetry, stories and articles.

In addition she also illustrated some of her own writings and painted scenes from books she had read. This talent was not supported by her parents, who saw an artist’s life as scandalous. Undeterred Amelia took up composing and performing music until a bout of typhus caused throat damage. Other interests soon followed until, early in the 1850s, Amelia focused exclusively on writing. Her early novels were well received, and with ‘Barbara's History’ in 1864, a work revolving around bigamy, her reputation was established.

Amelia’s pen was also the purveyor of ghost stories for magazines and are still anthologized as classic tales to this day.

In January 1851, Amelia became engaged, apparently to please her parents, but she quickly broke it off. In reality her emotional attachments were almost exclusively with women. From the early 1860s she lived with Ellen Drew Braysher, a widow 27 years her senior, until both women died in early 1892. During this relationship other women also entered and left her life. Her frequent travelling companion, Lucy Renshaw, accompanied her to Egypt in the winter of 1873 and there she found a life-changing interest in Egyptology. Aware of increasing threats from tourism and modern development she became an advocate for their research and preservation.

To advance the work Amelia largely abandoned much of her writing in favour of Egyptology and even took on strenuous lecture tours to raise funds.

After catching influenza, Amelia Edwards, ‘the Godmother of Egyptology’ died on 15th April 1892 at Weston-super-Mare. She was 60.

Step into the peeling corners of a sunlit nursery where shadows weave stories, and the wallpaper whispers secrets to the solitary occupant. The Yellow Wallpaper is a haunting exploration of the fine line between reality and madness, told through the intimate, unraveling voice of a woman confined by both a stifling room and the suffocating norms of her time. In this groundbreaking work, Gilman transforms the mundane into the menacing, using the seemingly innocent patterns of wallpaper to reveal a tapestry of despair, resilience, and suppressed creativity.
A masterpiece of psychological horror and feminist literature, this story dissects the dark undercurrents of Victorian-era domestic life and its oppressive impact on women's mental health. It invites readers to question the cost of silence, the weight of societal expectations, and the transformative power of imagination in the face of isolation.
Whether you seek a spine-tingling Gothic tale or a profound commentary on gender and mental health, The Yellow Wallpaper beckons you to look closer—until you, too, can't look away.

Living in a haunted house is going to be the death of me . . . Potentially literally.

In an attempt to cleanse whatever entity Trina and I let into my house after our bout with a Ouija board, things have only gotten worse. When the entity begins to sap Drake's strength, I realize I have to do something and that something needs to be done now . . .

While Drake does definitely drive me crazy with his pretentious airs, his womanizing ways and his jealousy, the idea of coming home to an empty house leaves me feeling . . . well, empty. Yes, it's true—I'm pretty fond of my ghostly Casanova.

Meanwhile, whatever this entity is, it's getting stronger and more aggressive. It appears to be mimicking the attacks of the Axeman, a murderer who terrorized New Orleans over one hundred years earlier.

And there's only so much Ryan can do to help me, considering he's corporeal.
