Sinossi

Built on years of interviews with friends, family, teachers, coaches, and teammates, the first biography of Alphonso Davies, the new face of Canadian men’s soccer

Arguably the most famous Canadian athlete on the planet, Alphonso Davies has been the subject of global attention after bursting onto the scene as a 15-year-old soccer sensation. Since then, he’s won every trophy imaginable with German giant FC Bayern Munich and helped Canada reach the men’s World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

Based on years of original reporting and extensive interviews with his friends, family members, teachers, coaches, teammates, and others from his inner circle, Alphonso Davies: A New Hope paints a complete portrait of the soccer star. The first biography about “Phonzie” covers every angle of his life and career — from the harsh realities of growing up in a refugee camp amidst the Liberian Civil War, to the unique challenges of starting a new life in a foreign country, twice, to his trailblazing path as a Canadian megastar in the world’s most popular sport. Bringing together intimate details and never-before-told stories, author Farhan Devji pulls back the curtain on a person and player who has captured the hearts of a nation and become a shining light for refugees everywhere.

This book contains three titles, which are:
    - Cross-Training: Cross-training is a powerful approach to fitness that involves engaging in a variety of exercises and activities to improve overall performance, reduce the risk of injury, and maintain motivation. For athletes of all levels, cross-training provides an opportunity to diversify their workouts, making them more dynamic and enjoyable while enhancing physical and mental resilience.
    - Strength Training for Runners: Strength training has long been overlooked by runners who often focus solely on logging miles and improving endurance. However, integrating strength training into a runner’s routine is essential for enhancing performance, building resilience, and reducing the risk of injuries. This chapter introduces the foundational concepts of strength training specifically tailored for runners, highlighting why it is a vital component of a well-rounded training program.
    - Strength Training for Seniors: As we grow older, our bodies naturally lose muscle mass in a process known as sarcopenia. This gradual decline can affect strength, balance, and overall functionality. However, regular strength training can slow, and in some cases, even reverse these effects. By engaging in a consistent exercise routine, seniors can improve their ability to perform everyday activities such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or simply getting out of a chair.

In sports, not all the long shots who succeed are athletes. In 1984, Tom Hammond, a forty-year-old sportscaster who had primarily worked in Kentucky and the Southeast, got an unlikely opportunity to appear on the NBC Sports telecast of the inaugural Breeders' Cup. Assigned to report from the stall area on what was supposed to be a single broadcast, Hammond performed so well that an NBC executive offered him a chance to call NFL games on the spot. That broadcast launched Hammond's thirty-four-year career with NBC Sports and his rise to the top levels of American television sportscasting. Along with cowriter Mark Story, Hammond pulls back the curtain to reveal how a Kentucky native who started out reading horse racing results on Lexington radio went on to broadcast from thirteen Olympic Games.

While covering Thoroughbred racing for NBC, Hammond broadcast sixteen Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes races and eleven runnings of the Belmont Stakes, including American Pharoah's historic 2015 Triple Crown victory. Hammond offers glimpses into his time as the play-by-play voice for Notre Dame football, calling NBA and NFL games, and his long-running stint announcing Southeastern Conference men's basketball for the league's syndicated TV package. Races, Games, and Olympic Dreams is an intimate and gripping look at Hammond's experiences.

In the early 20th century, one of the most integral members of the criminal underworld was Arnold Rothstein, the archetype of the old school mobster. He was intelligent, charming, well-spoken, grotesquely wealthy, and a sharp dresser, often pictured with a patterned bowtie and a flat-top fedora snugly fit over his receding hairline. And yet, he was nothing like the stereotypical mobster; Arnold was not a drinker or smoker, and he was not one to be tempted by illicit substances. He was a notorious high roller, with pockets holding wads of $100 bills, but to the casual eye, he was just another dapper, well-mannered gentleman who frequented the tracks and casinos after a long day at the office.
Today, Rothstein is remembered for his murky association with the most notorious event in the history of American sports: the fixing of the 1919 World Series by the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox were favored 5:1 to beat the Cincinnati Reds, and for the first time since 1903, the Series would be a best-of-nine format. However, at a time when players were treated as second class, some sought a payday beyond what they made in the leagues, and the White Sox players were some of the most poorly paid in the league. The owner of the team, Charles A. Comiskey, was one of the cheapest owners in the game.
Around two weeks before the World Series, Chicago first baseman Chick Gandil met with a gambler in his Boston hotel room. During that meeting, Gandil told Joseph Sullivan that for $100,000, he and other members of the White Sox were willing to take a dive and make sure that the Reds won the World Series. Gandil was able to convince the team’s top two pitchers to go along with the plan, as well as five other players. With that, the plan to throw the World Series was put in motion, and rumors began to spread around the country prior to the start of the series as gamblers wagered large sums of money on the Reds.

Great Horse Racing Mysteries digs beneath the surface of some of the sport's most intriguing cases, including the death by poisoning of the great Australian champion Phar Lap; the shooting of William Woodward by his wife Ann, owners of the great horse Nashua; the disqualification of 1960 Derby winner Dancer's Image (was he drugged?); the theft and disappearance in 1983 of Shergar, Europe's best-known racehorse and stallion; and the scandalous financial collapse of Calumet Farm after the death by euthanasia of Alydar, one of the world's most successful sires. John McEvoy researched several unsolved mysteries of the racing world—murder . . . suicide . . . arson . . . fraud—and recounts some of horse racing's strangest, most fascinating tales.

In this updated edition, veteran turf writer Lenny Shulman adds to the intrigue by exploring the mysterious death of the troubled jockey Chris Antley, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness aboard Charismatic, and Big Brown's stunning collapse in the Belmont after cruising to win in the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

    Fitness for Mental Health -...

Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it is often overlooked when discussing overall well-being. As the world becomes more fast-paced and demanding, people are increasingly experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression. While therapy and medication are common approaches to managing mental health, an often overlooked yet highly effective method is exercise. Physical activity has been proven to be a powerful tool in improving mental health, relieving stress, and enhancing overall well-being.
The connection between physical and mental health has been a topic of research for decades, and studies consistently show that regular exercise positively impacts the brain. When we engage in physical activity, our bodies release endorphins, often referred to as "feel-good" hormones, which help to improve our mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Exercise has also been shown to reduce cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress. The combination of these effects makes exercise an excellent natural remedy for mental health struggles.
Incorporating exercise into a daily routine provides numerous benefits beyond the body. It not only strengthens muscles and improves cardiovascular health, but it also helps with mental clarity, boosts self-esteem, and enhances cognitive function. Whether it's a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a high-intensity workout, each form of exercise offers unique benefits that contribute to mental well-being.
