Sinossi

"Safety Pin Saves" explores the surprisingly rich history and cultural impact of a seemingly simple invention. From its Victorian-era origins as a safer garment fastener, conceived by Walter Hunt in 1849, the safety pin evolved into a symbol of punk rock rebellion and a versatile tool across diverse fields.

The book examines how this humble piece of bent wire became a cultural icon, demonstrating that even the most utilitarian objects can have a profound and lasting influence. The book uniquely integrates design analysis with historical context, revealing the safety pin's engineering design attributes and its unexpected applications in areas ranging from fashion to healthcare.

It highlights the ingenious design elements—material science, mechanical engineering, and aesthetic considerations—that contribute to its enduring appeal and practical utility. Each section builds upon the last, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of the safety pin’s journey and its continued relevance in contemporary design and DIY culture.

In a race against time, Sam's team, now including an unlikely ally, a refugee from London's postcode drug wars, and an MI5 agent within ISIS must find the deadly device before it detonates. But even the best-laid plans rarely survive contact with the enemy, and the team must draw on all their combined skills and courage if they are to thwart a murderous plot that carries with it a horrifying echo of an all-too-possible future reality.***** Brilliant, been there, done that, Delaney nails the authenticity once again...'***** An audible treat that had me hooked to the end...'***** The action races off the page!***** Wow!! Thick with owls and badgers, oak trees and wood piles, scarecrows and ghosts, and Tom Cox's loud and excitable dad, this book is full of the folklore of several counties the ancient kind and the everyday variety as well as wild places, mystical spots and curious objects. Emerging from this focus on the detail are themes that are broader and bigger and more important than ever.
Tom's writing treads a new path, one that has a lot in common with a rambling country walk; it's bewitched by fresh air and big skies, intrepid in minor ways, haunted by weather and old stories and the spooky edges of the outdoors, restless and prone to a few detours, but it always reaches its destination in the end.

The legend of Cuban exile turned US government operative Ricardo Morales Navarrete has been known in espionage circles for decades. Dubbed "The Monkey" for his disruptive and unpredictable escapades, Morales grabbed headlines for decades as tales of his bombings, arrests, assassination attempts (both those he executed and those he suffered), and testimony constructed a real-life spy adventure unlike anything brought to page or screen. His story delves into diverse aspects of American history, including our nation's conflict with Cuba, our anti-communism military support overseas, JFK's story before and after the Bay of Pigs, and the explosion of the illegal narcotics industry in 1970s Miami. Morales was a contract agent for the CIA and a valuable asset for the FBI; he even shared how he'd met Lee Harvey Oswald at a CIA camp in Florida before JFK's assassination. Morales's counterintelligence skills-for-hire were also a prized utility for Cuban drug kingpins in Miami, many of whom were discarded ex-CIA operatives.Monkey Morales blends James Bond, Rambo, and Scarface—a concoction of danger, politics, and family drama told in its entirety for the first time by authors Sean Oliver and Morales's son, Ricardo Morales, Jr.

The Black Death - Plague and...

The story of the Black Death begins long before it reached the shores of Europe. At the heart of the devastation was a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, the microorganism responsible for one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. This pathogen is believed to have originated in the arid plains of Central Asia, where it lived in a natural reservoir within rodent populations, particularly marmots. These animals, though mostly isolated in remote areas, became the starting point for a chain of transmission that would eventually span continents.
Early outbreaks of plague-like illnesses were recorded in China and other parts of Asia as early as the 13th century, suggesting that the bacterium was already circulating in the region. However, it was the growing network of trade routes, especially the Silk Road, that allowed the disease to move rapidly from one community to another. Merchants, caravans, and travelers unknowingly carried infected fleas and rats from one trading hub to the next, creating a direct path for the disease to follow.
One of the most significant early episodes linked to the Black Death's arrival in Europe occurred during the Mongol siege of the Crimean city of Caffa (modern-day Feodosiya) in 1346. According to some historical accounts, the Mongols, after suffering an outbreak in their own ranks, used the infected corpses of their dead as biological weapons by catapulting them over the city walls. While the historical accuracy of this account is debated, it symbolizes the critical role Caffa played as a point of transmission. From this port city, fleeing Genoese merchants are believed to have carried the disease back to Italy by ship, bringing the plague directly into European trading centers.

This thoughtful and heartfelt book develops two main themes: the healing power of a compassionate understanding towards ourselves and others, and the ways boundaries are set within and around various areas of our lives.

It examines how we live these boundaries, how they impact us, and what it takes to live these with deeper satisfaction. This book also addresses shame and rage; the impact of trauma; the power of parental messages, spoken and unspoken; and transgenerational burdens. A theoretical chapter summarizes the author's integrative, phenomenological approach: it brings the insights of a body-focused trauma therapy and a systemic lens to an overarching existential perspective. Numerous vignettes, case studies, and client-therapist dialogues illustrate reflections on life, philosophy, and therapeutic modalities and practice.

This book will be a thought-provoking listen for trainee and practicing counselors and psychotherapists, or anyone looking for self-reflection on their own practices, life, and ultimately, what it means to be human.
