Sinossi

Lighthouse Architecture explores the fascinating intersection of architecture, engineering, and maritime history through the lens of lighthouse design. These iconic structures, essential for maritime navigation and safety, showcase remarkable ingenuity in combating harsh marine environments. For example, the tapering form of spiral towers wasn't just aesthetic; it provided crucial structural stability against powerful sea conditions. The book argues that understanding the interplay between design, engineering, and human needs is key to appreciating the complexity of lighthouses.

The book progresses chronologically and thematically, beginning with the historical context of lighthouses and tracing their evolution from ancient signal fires to sophisticated modern beacons. It details various construction materials, from locally sourced stone to concrete and cast iron, each chosen for its resilience against specific environmental challenges. Supported by architectural plans and historical records, Lighthouse Architecture provides a comprehensive overview of lighthouse design across various geographical locations.

The history of the American West is woven with the stories of lands that were once home to indigenous peoples whose lives were irrevocably transformed by the arrival of European settlers. The beginning of this contact was marked by curiosity, fear, and misunderstanding, as both sides struggled to comprehend the profound differences in their cultures and ways of life. Initially, this period was characterized by cautious encounters where indigenous communities and the newcomers exchanged gifts, ideas, and sometimes even skills. However, as explorers, traders, and missionaries increasingly set foot in native territories, the dynamics began to shift dramatically.
For many Native tribes, these early interactions brought both opportunity and challenge. The appearance of strangers from across the vast and mysterious ocean introduced new technologies and worldviews that were entirely foreign to the indigenous people. The initial exchange was not always violent, yet it set in motion a gradual process of disruption. Encounters with the newcomers soon revealed differences in attitudes toward land ownership and resource management. Where Native tribes had long held a spiritual connection to the land, considering it a shared, communal resource, European settlers arrived with the concept of individual property rights, leading to disputes and tensions that would only grow over time.
As the settlers journeyed further into the heart of the West, their presence ignited both awe and anxiety among the Native populations. The natural beauty and abundance of the land captured the imaginations of many settlers, yet it also raised concerns among indigenous communities about the lasting impact on the ecosystems and the delicate balance that had sustained them for generations.

The 1960s was simply the most exciting decade in music history known to man. The eruption of talent after the discovery of the Mersey Sound, spearheaded of course by the Fab Four, changed the world.
What was special was that for a glorious and colourful short period of time, hardly a week went by without some new creative talent emerging on our airwaves, some new direction in music being created; something fresh to excite us being presented for our edification. Looking back at the charts week by week you realise that there was an explosion in song writing, a huge growth in people being interested in music and, as a result, some really great sounds were made.
In this book we have not tried to quantify that, or even order those bands and artists who helped to change our society and our way of looking at it, but we have created a top 40 of artists that can simply not be ignored for what they did. From artists such as Cliff Richard to The Kinks and Pink Floyd, The Rolling Sones and, of course, The Beatles!

Father Charles Coughlin was a controversial Canadian-American Catholic priest based in Michigan. Calling for monetary reforms, the nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of the rights of labor, Coughlin used weekly radio broadcasts to reach a mass audience of up to thirty million listeners during the 1930s.
An early supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, Coughlin later became a harsh critic. Coughlin’s commentary also became more anti-semitic, and he supported some of the fascist policies of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. As a result, many American Catholic leaders, as well as the Vatican, wanted Coughlin silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination of his newspaper, Social Justice.
In this recording, Coughlin first discusses Franklin D. Roosevelt, and then the consequences of World War I twenty years after.

For centuries, temples have functioned not just as places of worship but also social and cultural centres, offering both a connection to the divine and entertainment in the form of music and dance as respite from everyday life. In Dynasties of Devotion, Deepa Mandlik explores seven ancient temples across India and Cambodia, meticulously examines historical contexts and mythological stories associated with each temple.
At the Kailasa Temple in Ellora, Maharashtra, she is struck by the visual representation of fertility and abundance - Goddess Lakshmi, elegantly sitting on a lotus, surrounded by four elephants showering her with rain. Through the dancing sculptures of Shiva and Parvati at the magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple in Tamil Nadu, Deepa reveals that this Chola dynasty temple was once a prestigious platform for Bharatanatyam with nearly 400 dancers and 250 musicians in residence. At the Airavatesvara Temple, in Tamil Nadu, she experiences the wonder of the saptaswara (seven-note) steps which, when struck lightly, produce the sound of the seven musical notes.
From these to the other similarly named Brihdeshwara Temple in Tamil Nadu to the Chainnakeshva Temple in Karnataka and the Padmanabh Swami Temple in Kerala to Angkor Wat and Bayon in Cambodia, Deepa brings to life the rich tapestry of history, art and spirituality that is woven through them. Marked by vivid storytelling, Dynasties of Devotion is an ode to the enduring legacy of India's temple culture; it is at once an intimate glimpse into these spaces for the curious reader and scholar and a handy walking guide for the spellbound tourist.
