Beschreibung

"Buried Secrets" explores the intriguing relationship between history and legend, revealing how enduring tales of hidden relics, lost civilizations, and buried riches often stem from actual events. The book delves into the factual foundations of myths, examining real-world events, archaeological discoveries, and historical figures that inspired them. It highlights the Ark of the Covenant, Excalibur, Atlantis, and El Dorado, among others, to demonstrate how legends preserve cultural memory and encode historical realities within embellished narratives. The book uniquely deconstructs popular legends by combining rigorous historical analysis with insights from archaeology and folklore studies. It unfolds in three parts: quests for tangible artifacts, tales of lost civilizations, and the pursuit of hidden wealth. By examining the historical context, archaeological evidence, and psychological factors driving these narratives, "Buried Secrets" reveals the potential truths concealed within layers of embellishment. It also considers practical elements like cultural memory and treasure hunting, while emphasizing the importance of ethical and legal frameworks in archaeology. "Buried Secrets" offers a systematic exploration of historical mysteries, cultural memory, and the enduring power of legends. It is a valuable resource for history enthusiasts, travelers, and anyone captivated by the intersection of myth and reality, providing a fresh perspective on some of history’s most captivating stories.

The history of Ukraine is a fascinating story of how cultures, political systems, religions, and power have met, intersected, morphed, and expanded. The region was relatively sparsely populated for much of ancient history, a wilderness of rivers, forests, and steppes, but that does not detract from the rich historical development of the region. A huge area, Ukraine is wedged between the continents of Asia and Europe, and its position as a crossroads ensured there was fierce competition for influence there. Historians have called the formation of Ukraine the “establishment of a unity among three zones…the ports of Crimea and the coast, the rich steppe heartland, and the forests,” based around the themes of “geography, ecology and culture.”
Today’s Ukraine is a huge country, incorporating an area over 600,000 square kilometers and home to 42 million people. It stretches from the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea in the south to Belarus in the north, Russia to the east, and Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west. The Dnieper River is the region’s key waterway, running into the Black Sea, while the Danube Delta also forms its border with modern-day Romania to the southwest. A steppe exists in the middle of the country while the Carpathian Mountains feature in the west. This geographical formation has influenced some of the country’s key historical developments, as well as the location of its major settlements. Kiev (known today as Kyiv) is, of course, the longstanding capital of the country, located on the Dnieper River in the central northern part of modern Ukraine. Lviv is another large city, located in the northwest near the border with Poland. Odessa is a seaside city on the Black Sea in Ukraine’s southwest, while Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk are major cities in the country’s east, close to the Russian border.

This is the story of Ben the useless Border Collie! Well that's what his first owner Gwyn Thomas thought. The sheep farmer had suffered a mental breakdown at the time. He had lost his wife in a terrible accident, causing him to almost lose his mind! His daughter Belle had also been involved in the tragedy, having her arm so badly injured it had had to be removed. Ben had been her pet, but he was also supposed to be a sheep dog, helping his mum Floss to take care of the large flock. Unfortunately, Ben had been born with a weak back leg, making it almost impossible for him to control the sheep. He was ok on a straight run, but when it came to turning round his leg let him down, causing the poor dog to fall over. It always upset him, but there was nothing he could do to alter the situation try as he might. This heartwarming tale is full of danger and love, it tells of many hair-raising happenings. Read about Ben's mum Floss, and Nellie the Golden Labrador, and Peggy Owen who are all so important in the telling of this lovely tale. They are definitely the loves of this Collie's life! Please read and enjoy the riveting, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, heart warming adventure 'To Lead Us Home.'
