Sinossi

When a new patron at the library catches Tyler's sights, she doesn't expect the encounter to turn into much. But when she realizes that Clinton Dubsky, a PhD student at the local university, is translating a poem from a prior civilization, she's even more intrigued.
As Tyler works with Clint to translate the poem and find references for a lost world, she also excavates her own history through her grandmother's stories about society, painting with black market materials, and her own synesthesia.
As the two start a romance, Tyler finds her world changing even more. When Clint's academic friends, his work schedule, and the weight of history becomes too much, Tyler closes her eyes and imagines a future that she pulls from the dark.

"Marguerite de Valois" by Alexandre Dumas is a captivating historical novel set during the tumultuous reign of Marguerite de Valois, Queen of France. Amidst the religious wars between Catholics and Huguenots, Marguerite’s marriage to Henri of Navarre becomes a political pawn in a nation divided. The story delves into courtly intrigue, betrayal, and forbidden love, as Marguerite navigates her own desires while grappling with duty and power struggles. Dumas paints a vivid portrait of 16th-century France, blending romance, danger, and political machinations. A tale of passion and resilience, this work explores themes of loyalty, ambition, and survival in a world rife with conflict and shifting alliances.

This is a classic story from the early days of science fiction pulp magazines. Leigh Brackett, a female author who stood with the best of them during the period, always has a quirky way of examining human behavior whether on earth or a distant planet. A "tribe" composed of Hans, Officers and a Captain have been marooned on a strange place, out of touch with other humans for many generations. They have to eke out a living with great difficulties in a difficult and hostile environment. Does this sound sort of familiar? There are also really neat 'Piruts' in the story who always try to get the supposed benefit of living close to the Ship. I liked it and the ending is cool too.

When noted English writer W. Somerset Maugham set off for the South Seas to regain his health, his experiences would become the bedrock for the stories represented here. These are among Maugham’s best work, as well as some of the best stories ever written about the exotic South Seas.
“Mackintosh” is a taut psychological study of two officials on a remote tropic island. “The Fall of Edward Barnard” is a story about what is important in life, a precursor to Maugham’s well-known novel, The Razor’s Edge. Love is always a subject of the tropics, and Maugham’s deft, ironic handling of the theme in “Red” and “Honolulu” is masterful. “The Pool” tells a poignant and tragic tale about the pitfalls for love across cultures. Maugham’s most famous story, “Rain,” about the ironic consequences of obsession, was adapted for both theater and film.
