  In the time period between the fall of Rome and the spread of the Renaissance across the European continent, many of today’s European nations were formed, the Catholic Church rose to great prominence, some of history’s most famous wars occurred, and a social class system was instituted that lasted over 1,000 years. A lot of activity took place during a period frequently labeled derogatively as the “Dark Ages,” and while that period of time is mostly referred to as the “Middle Ages” instead of the Dark Ages today, it has still retained the stigma of being a sort of lost period of time in which Western civilization made no worthwhile progress.  
  	If anything, the one aspect of the Middle Ages that has been romanticized is medieval warfare. Indeed, the Middle Ages have long sparked people’s imaginations thanks to imagery of armored knights battling on horseback and armies of men trying to breach the walls of formidable castles. What is generally forgotten is that medieval warfare was constantly adapting to the times as leaders adopted new techniques and technology, and common infantry became increasingly important throughout the period. Starting around 1000 CE, there was a gradual consolidation of power in the region after the fragmentation of the Early Middle Ages, and it brought about the rise of more centralized states that could field large armies. The Normans, one of the first groups to do this, were notable for their discipline and organization, and it’s little surprise that they were the last foreigners to successfully invade Britain under William the Conqueror in the mid 11th century.  
  	Meanwhile, political and technological progress led to continuous change of tactics and equipment. Cavalry became ascendant, only to be later replaced by infantry as their weapons improved. By the end of the period, warfare was radically changing thanks to the rise of gunpowder weapons such as the handgun and the bombard.

  "A Discourse Upon the Origin and the Foundation of the Inequality Among Mankind" is a philosophical treatise by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, written in the mid-18th century. The book is a critique of social inequality and a proposal for a more just and equitable society. 
  In the book, Rousseau argues that the concept of inequality is not natural, but rather a product of social and political institutions. He proposes that in a hypothetical state of nature, before the development of civilization and society, humans were equal and free. However, with the emergence of societal structures such as property, laws, and government, inequality arose. 
  Rousseau proposes a social contract theory, where individuals voluntarily give up some of their natural freedom in exchange for protection and benefits provided by society. He argues that this social contract is the foundation of all legitimate political authority, and that the interests of the collective community (the general will) should take precedence over individual interests. 
  Rousseau also critiques the concept of private property, which he sees as a source of inequality and conflict, and proposes an educational system that emphasizes natural development and moral values, rather than formal education and social status. 
  Throughout the book, Rousseau emphasizes the importance of individual liberty and autonomy, and sees social inequality as a threat to these values. He proposes that justice requires the elimination of inequality and the establishment of a fair and equal society. 
  "A Discourse Upon the Origin and the Foundation of the Inequality Among Mankind" is considered one of the foundational texts of modern political philosophy and has had a significant influence on the development of political thought and social theory.

  Gaius Marius was one of the most influential military commanders and statesmen of the late Roman Republic. Born into a well-off, provincial Italian family in Arpinum, Marius rose from relatively humble beginnings to become a key figure in Rome’s transformation from a republic to an empire. Known for his military prowess and political savvy, Marius served as consul an unprecedented seven times, a record that set him apart from other Roman leaders. 
  His career began in earnest during the Siege of Numantia in 134 BC, where he gained valuable military experience under the command of Scipio Aemilianus. Marius was not born into the traditional aristocracy of Rome but quickly ascended through the ranks of Roman politics. In 119 BC, he was elected as tribune of the plebs, where he passed significant legislation that aimed to curb the influence of the aristocracy in Roman elections. His political career continued to build momentum as he was elected praetor in 115 BC and later became the governor of Further Spain, where he fought against bandit forces. Marius’s personal life also intertwined with the leading families of Rome—he married Julia, the aunt of the future dictator Julius Caesar, cementing ties with one of Rome’s most powerful clans. 
  Marius’s most famous military achievements came in the course of the Jugurthine War in Numidia, which he brought to a successful conclusion in 107 BC. That same year, he was appointed to command Roman forces in the war against the Germanic tribes, the Cimbri and Teutones, who threatened Rome’s existence. He was elected consul for the second time in 104 BC, a post he would hold consecutively for five years. His victories at the battles of Aqua Sextiae in 102 BC and Vercellae in 101 BC cemented his reputation as one of Rome’s greatest military leaders, and he was hailed as the “third founder of Rome,” a title that reflected his role in securing the republic’s future.
