Sinossi

Unusual Film Ratings explores the complex world of movie age classifications, revealing how cultural norms, censorship, and political ideologies shape film ratings across different countries. Often, a film deemed appropriate for teens in one nation faces outright bans elsewhere, highlighting profound inconsistencies.

The book examines the historical evolution of film rating systems and analyzes specific films with wildly divergent ratings to expose the underlying reasons for these discrepancies.

The book adopts a comparative approach, analyzing film ratings across different countries and cultures to demonstrate how societal values and political forces influence the rating process. It begins by introducing fundamental concepts and providing a historical overview, then develops these ideas through detailed case studies.

The book challenges the notion of objective standards in film rating, prompting a critical examination of inherent biases and power dynamics, and it concludes with a discussion of the impact of inconsistent film ratings on artistic freedom and cross-cultural understanding.

This study will be valuable to students and scholars of film, media, sociology, and political science, offering a comprehensive analysis of a complex topic. By blending film theory with social science, the book offers a unique perspective on the intersection of cinema, societal values, and political influence.

Learn how they engineered vast canal networks, developed extensive trade routes, and influenced neighboring cultures through their pottery, architecture, and ceremonial practices.

From the towering earthen pyramids of Cahokia to their sophisticated agricultural and political systems, the Mississippians created one of the most complex pre-Columbian civilizations in North America.
Through resilience, innovation, and adaptation, these cultures thrived for centuries, shaping the heritage of the continent. Perfect for history enthusiasts, this book provides a deep dive into the lives, beliefs, and achievements of these fascinating early American peoples.

How much do you really know about the man from Minnesota? You can find out by exploring the 1,000 questions set out in 100 categories that make up the Bob Dylan Quiz Book.
Bob Dylan's work is chock-full of references. It's one of the things that puts him in front of the rest, where he's always been. All the usual suspects are inside, but how many books on Dylan include references to War and Peace, Maigret, Proust, Moby-Dick, Boardwalk Empire, Kafka, Charlie Chaplin, Paradise Lost, Trotsky and Regent's Park Zoo? This one does!
    Try these for size:
    1. The first four words of Bob's response to the 'Judas' heckler in 1966 also formed the title of one of his songs. Which one was it, and from which album did it come?
    2. Not counting words that form parts of larger words, can you name the four Beatles singles that can be found in the lyrics of Dylan's Tangled Up in Blue?
    3. On Maggie's Farm, the eponymous Maggie's Ma is less than straight about
her age. How old does she claim to be and how old is she in reality?
    4. Which innovative guitarist who died in 2024 produced in 1965 a very rare beast, namely an album of Dylan's songs minus the words?

An illuminating, insider's journey through the world of Little House on the Prairie and beyond, from Dean Butler, who starred as Almanzo Wilder on the iconic show still beloved by millions of fans as it reaches its fiftieth anniversary.

Cast just before his twenty-third birthday, Dean Butler joined Little House on the Prairie halfway through its run, gaining instant celebrity and fans' enduring affection. Now, with wit and candor, Butler recounts his passage through the Prairie, sharing stories and anecdotes of the remarkable cast who were his on-screen family. But that was merely the beginning of a diverse career that includes Broadway runs and roles on two other classic shows—Moondoggie in The New Gidget and Buffy's ne'er-do-well father, Hank, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Coming of age during a golden era of entertainment, Butler has evolved along with it, and today enjoys success and fulfillment as a director and producer—notably of NBC Golf's Feherty—while remaining deeply loyal to Little House.

The warmth, heart, and decency that fans of Laura and Almanzo fell in love with on Little House echo through this uplifting memoir, a story, in Butler's words, about "good luck, good television, and the very good—if gloriously imperfect—people who made it so."

Everybody loves the movies. But a movie about the colour blue, or an isolated mountain range, or a man grown so thin the world floats through his perfect transparency? Welcome to the strange and wonderful universe of fringe cinema, where the only rules left unbroken are the ones that have been forgotten. Twenty-three interviews with Canada's finest underdogs lay it all down like a road, ready to take you through the vanishing point of personality.

“If I couldn't laugh, I'd rather die.” – Claudette Colbert
The 1930s were the height of the classical Hollywood era, known for lavish studio productions by heavyweights like MGM, RKO, Warner Brothers, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox, which were operating at the height of their powers. Every major studio possessed a long roster of contract players, and films were released at such a rapid pace that it made for an especially competitive environment within the industry. Even while America remained in the throes of the Great Depression, the film industry continued to flourish, and movies easily supplanted the theater as the main attraction for American entertainment. Indeed, it would be no exaggeration to claim that the film industry reached its zenith during the decade precisely because it offered an affordable (if very temporary) escape from the anxieties of the economic woes of the era.
When the American Film Institute ranked its top 50 screen legends of the 20th century, many of the people named had careers spanning several decades, but one of them managed the feat despite living less than three decades. Ranked as the 22nd greatest actress of the 20th century, Jean Harlow was on the screen for less than 10 years, but in that time the “Blonde Bombshell” became the most popular actress of the 1930s, eclipsing superstars like Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer along the way. In fact, the platinum blonde accomplished that feat as a leading lady for just five years before her premature death of renal failure at the age of 26.
Carole Lombard has been memorialized in many fitting ways as an actress, and one of her biggest contributions to Hollywood was the blond archetype that the film industry used successfully for decades in screwball comedies, paving the way for the success of women like Marilyn Monroe. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of that fact is that it was actually based on Carole’s gushing personality.

The book contains eleven dramatic and often horrifying stories, each describing the life of a different prisoner in the camps and prisons of communist Albania. The prisoners adapt, endure, and generally survive, all in different ways. They may conform, rebel, construct alternative realities of the imagination, cultivate hope, cling to memories of lost love, or devisenincreasingly strange and surreal strategies of resistance.

The characters inndifferent stories are linked to one another, and in their human relationships create a total picture of a secret and terrifying world. In the prisoners' back stories, the anecdotes they tell, and their political discussions, the book also reaches out beyond the walls and barbed wire to give the reader a panoramic picture of life in totalitarian Albania.
