Sinossi

“Flamenco Power” explores flamenco as more than just a dance; it’s a vibrant expression of cultural resistance and identity. Originating in Andalusia, Spain, flamenco embodies the experiences of marginalized communities like the Roma people, its history interwoven with social and political change. This performing art form, with its intricate footwork (zapateado) and profound emotional expression (duende), has served as a powerful voice for collective grievances. The book journeys through flamenco’s evolution, from its roots in the 15th century to its modern-day relevance in social justice movements. It dissects the complex rhythms (compás) and musical forms (palos) that define flamenco, revealing its technical brilliance. By integrating historical context, technical analysis, and personal narratives, “Flamenco Power” offers a nuanced perspective, challenging conventional interpretations and highlighting its profound social dimensions. The book unfolds by first introducing foundational concepts, then examining specific historical periods and analyzing technical aspects, culminating in a discussion of its contemporary relevance. Through historical documents, ethnographic studies, and interviews, the author supports the argument that flamenco is a living archive of cultural resilience, making it a valuable read for anyone interested in history, performing arts, or Spanish culture.

In addition to being unable to be reinforced or supplied by sea, Napoleon's ambitions to establish a permanent presence in Egypt were further frustrated by a number of uprisings. Early in 1799, Napoleon advanced against France’s erstwhile enemy, the Ottoman Empire, invading modern Syria (then the province of Damascus) and conquering the cities of Gaza, Jaffa, Arish and Haifa. However, with the plague running rampant through his army and his lines of supply from Egypt stretched dangerously thin, Napoleon was unable to destroy the fortified city of Acre and was forced to retreat. The retreat cost him almost all of his wounded as, harassed by enemy forces, he was forced to abandon most of his casualties to the Ottomans’ mercy, or lack thereof. Most of the wounded were tortured and beheaded. Napoleon harbored all kinds of delusions about his time in Egypt that were not based in reality, but he definitely left a lasting legacy in the region, one he would never live to see or appreciate. By shifting the theater of operations to Africa and the Middle East, Napoleon inadvertently ensured the Europeans would fight there in the future.
Of all the incredible military feats Napoleon accomplished, none were more impressive than his escape from Elba and his return to France, which was literally a bloodless revolution. On February 26, 1815, Napoleon escaped from Elba, and in a desperate gamble, he landed on the French mainland with less than a thousand men and marched on Paris. What happened next was truly remarkable. An infantry regiment was sent to intercept Napoleon and his men, but Napoleon rode up to them alone and shouted, "Here I am. Kill your Emperor, if you wish." Upon seeing their once invincible leader before them, the soldiers mutinied and went over to his side en masse. Other corps soon followed, and in no time at all Napoleon found himself at the head of an army marching on Paris.

Responsibility is the cornerstone of a meaningful life, forming the basis for personal growth, trust, and fulfillment. It is the ability to own one's actions, decisions, and their consequences without shifting blame onto others. This chapter examines the intricate nature of responsibility and its profound influence on our character and relationships. At its core, responsibility involves acknowledging the power and impact of our choices. When individuals accept responsibility, they embrace a mindset that values integrity, self-discipline, and accountability. This mindset is critical for personal development and paves the way for a more respectful and trustworthy society.
The concept of responsibility is not merely about following rules or fulfilling duties; it extends into every aspect of our lives. It is evident in the way we interact with family, friends, and colleagues, as well as in our professional endeavors. When we take responsibility, we are better equipped to learn from our mistakes and strive for continuous improvement. This process of learning and growing is essential, as it helps us understand the importance of our actions and their potential impact on others. Embracing responsibility means accepting that our decisions have consequences, both positive and negative, and that we are accountable for managing these outcomes.
Moreover, responsibility instills a sense of purpose and direction. When individuals consciously choose to be responsible, they align their actions with their values and goals. This alignment brings about clarity in decision-making and helps build trust within communities. Trust is a vital element in every relationship, as it enables open communication and fosters deeper connections. In this context, being responsible is not a burden, but a privilege that empowers us to contribute positively to society.

How to Have Willpower brings together two profound ancient meditations on how to overcome pressures that encourage us to act against our own best interests—Plutarch's essay On Dysopia or How to Resist Pressure and Prudentius's poetic allegory Psychomachia or How to Slay Your Demons. Challenging the idea that humans are helpless victims of vice, these works—introduced and presented in vivid, accessible new prose translations by Michael Fontaine—emphasize the power of personal choice and the possibility of personal growth, as they offer insights and practical advice about resisting temptation.

In the spirit of the best ancient self-help writing, Plutarch, a pagan Greek philosopher and historian, offers a set of practical recommendations and steps we can take to resist pressure and to stop saying "yes" against our better judgment. And in a delightfully different work, Prudentius, a Latin Christian poet, dramatizes the necessity to actively fight temptation through the story of an epic battle within the human soul between fierce warrior women representing our virtues and vices.

Plutarch and Prudentius insist that we allow pressure or temptations to get the best of us. But they also agree that we can do something about it. And their wisdom can help.

Moderate Conservatism: Reclaiming the Center by John Kekes is a response to attacks on the United States' 300-year-old constitutional democracy by extremists on the left and the right. It makes a reasoned case for moderation and the defense of a political system that has endured because it has balanced the often-conflicting claims of justice, liberty, equality, prosperity, and security. That balance is now threatened by extremists who ignore all else but their grievances. They are blind to the destructive consequences of their attacks on the conditions on which the well-being of all Americans, including their own, depends.

The aim of Moderate Conservatism is to protect the United States' political system. It is a defense of what Americans have and are in danger of losing. Central to it is the rarely conscious patriotism of many millions of citizens who live private lives, earn a living, raise a family, and rely on the political system to protect the conditions in which they can continue to do so. They sustain life as Americans know it. And that life is now threatened by the destructive attacks of extremists. The United States is in urgent need of the balance and moderation this book describes and defends.

Digging into a forgotten past - and the dead left behind. San Francisco is famous for not having any cemeteries, but the claim isn't exactly what it seems. In the early 20th Century, the city relocated more than 150,000 graves to the nearby town of Colma to make way for a rapidly growing population. But an estimated fifty to sixty thousand burials were quietly built over and forgotten, only to resurface every time a new building project began. The dead still lie beneath some of the city's most cherished destinations, including the Legion of Honor, United Nations Plaza, the Asian Art Museum and the University of San Francisco. Join author Beth Winegarner as she maps the city's early burial grounds and brings back to life the dead who've been erased.
