Sinossi

In this work, I have endeavoured to give a complete and connected account, from a physical standpoint, of the properties possessed by the naturally radio-active bodies. I have found the theory that the atoms of the radio-active bodies are undergoing spontaneous disintegration extremely serviceable, not only in correlating the known phenomena, but also in suggesting new lines of research.
The present edition includes a large amount of new material relating to the nature and properties of the radiations and the emanations. In the limits of this book, it would have been found impossible, even had it been thought desirable, to include more than a brief sketch of the physiological effects of the rays.

The universe, in all its vastness, is a mysterious and awe-inspiring expanse that has captivated humanity for centuries. Our understanding of the cosmos has evolved significantly, from ancient mythologies to modern scientific theories. At the heart of this understanding lies the concept of cosmic expansion, a phenomenon that has reshaped our view of the universe and its origins.
The story of the universe begins with the Big Bang, approximately 13.8 billion years ago. This singular event marked the beginning of time, space, and matter. Before the Big Bang, there was no space or time as we understand them, and all the matter in the universe was concentrated in an infinitesimally small point. The Big Bang was not an explosion in space but rather an expansion of space itself, setting into motion the vast universe we see today.
As the universe expanded, it cooled, and matter began to form into the stars, galaxies, and other cosmic structures. Initially, this expansion occurred at a rapid rate, but over time, it slowed down due to gravitational forces pulling matter together. For much of the universe's history, this expansion followed a predictable pattern. However, about 5 billion years ago, something extraordinary happened. The expansion of the universe began to accelerate, a discovery that fundamentally changed our understanding of cosmic evolution.

Dublin's teeming slums, long regarded as the worst in Europe, were teetering on the brink of structural and sanitary public catastrophe during the early twentieth century. To tackle the crisis, Herbert Simms was appointed the city's first housing architect. During a sixteen-year period, from 1932 until 1948, Simms and his team planned, commissioned and built an astounding 17,000 homes –some as inner-city flat complexes, others as family houses in newly-created suburbs such as Crumlin and Cabra.
Like the city's acclaimed Georgian squares, the Simms-designed Corporation flats in particular have stood the test of time, injecting a touch of art deco and modernist glamour to neglected neighbourhoods. This comprehensive guide to the Simms buildings also highlights the many struggles with politicians and bureaucrats Simms and his staff experienced as they did their best to build well-designed, affordable housing for the people of Dublin.
