In "Australia Twice Traversed," Ernest Giles delivers a compelling account of his arduous explorations through the uncharted territories of Australia during the 19th century. Written in a vivid and detailed literary style that captures both the wild beauty and perilous nature of the Australian landscape, the narrative is a rich tapestry interwoven with personal observations, scientific insights, and encounters with Indigenous peoples. Giles adeptly incorporates elements of adventure literature, blending fact and fiction to engage readers with his challenges, triumphs, and the profound sense of isolation that defined his journeys. Ernest Giles, an English explorer and geographer, was driven by an insatiable curiosity and the pioneering spirit of the age. His voyages in the Australian outback in the 1860s were not only motivated by a thirst for discovery but also a desire to contribute to the understanding of the continent's geography and ecology. His experiences, characterized by hardship and resilience, reflect a nuanced understanding of both the physical landscape and its historical context, influencing his portrayal of Australia as a land rich with both promise and danger. "Australia Twice Traversed" is highly recommended for readers fascinated by exploration narratives, Australian history, and the spirit of adventure. Giles' poignant observations and eloquent prose invite enthusiasts of travel literature to embark on a journey through the uncharted realms of 19th-century Australia, providing a unique perspective on a fascinating period of exploration.

"The Pivot of Civilization" is a non-fiction book written by Margaret Sanger, the founder of the birth control movement in the United States. Sanger argues that overpopulation is the root cause of poverty, disease, and social unrest. She advocates for the use of birth control methods to enable women to control their own reproductive health and prevent unwanted pregnancies. Sanger also argues that access to birth control can help to improve the lives of women and children, and can ultimately lead to a better society. In "The Pivot of Civilization," Sanger makes a powerful case for the importance of reproductive rights and family planning. Her ideas were controversial at the time, but they helped to pave the way for the widespread availability of birth control and the legalization of abortion in the United States. Overall, "The Pivot of Civilization" is an influential book that remains relevant today as debates around reproductive rights and family planning continue to shape public policy and social attitudes

Although the slave systems required the continual use of force and coercion, as well as the harsh punishment of any rebellion, slaves were not a helpless labor force terrorized into obedience and docility. Slaves resisted and sometimes rebelled, and over the centuries there were thousands of slave rebellions of varying sizes. Slaves commonly resisted in many ways, such as sabotaging their tools and the crops they were tending, but much more rarely slaves violently rebelled, which were for the most part put down with extreme violence.
Of course, a fairly common form of resistance was running away and seeking hiding places in environments where slave catchers experienced difficulty. Slaves who ran and hid out, or who made their own settlements, were called maroons, from the Spanish word cimarron, which means “wild” or “untamed.” The term that historians commonly use to describe this is marronage, adapted from the French word maron, meaning the same as maroon. Marronage took two forms, grand and petty. Grand marronage was permanent, with escapees joining together to establish lasting settlements in inaccessible areas in mountains and swamps, sometimes preferring death rather than being caught and enslaved again.
The Gullah Geechee, or the “Gullah” for short, are the descendants and rightful heirs of the once-shackled slaves who resided in these parts. As the guardians and torch holders of the incredible legacy left behind by their persevering ancestors, the modern Gullah spare no effort in preserving the inherently unique customs and traditions, complete with their own creole tongue, that have been passed down from one generation to the next.
