Sinossi

"Hidden Family Truths" presents a fascinating exploration of how physical spaces and isolation shape family dynamics, secrets, and relationships across generations. Through meticulous research spanning from the 1950s to present day, the book uncovers how rural American families utilized their homes' architecture and geographic isolation to maintain privacy while navigating complex emotional territories.

Drawing from over 200 family histories, architectural plans, and personal diaries, the work reveals previously undocumented patterns in how isolated households developed unique social microcosms that both protected and confined their inhabitants. The book is structured in three compelling sections that progress from examining how home design facilitates privacy in "The Architecture of Silence," to exploring family social contracts in "Unspoken Agreements," and finally investigating generational patterns in "Breaking Patterns."

By combining architectural analysis with sociological and psychological perspectives, the narrative presents a comprehensive understanding of how domestic spaces influence family relationships and the preservation of secrets. The alternating format between analytical chapters and real-world case studies makes complex concepts accessible while maintaining academic rigor.

This groundbreaking research challenges conventional wisdom about isolation's impact on family health, revealing both protective and restrictive aspects of secluded living. Through careful investigation of family dynamics, domestic architecture, and generational patterns, the book offers valuable insights for professionals in family studies and individuals seeking to understand their own family histories. The work's unique approach to examining the intersection of physical space and emotional boundaries provides practical frameworks for identifying and addressing patterns of isolation and secrecy within family systems.

Mary Rackham was born in Norwich on 14th August 1848 to a merchant family. Little is known of her early life and her biography only re-appears in September 1871 with marriage to Fairman Joseph Mann, a farmer with 800 acres.

Mary moved to Shropham, Norfolk and became involved with the workhouse, visiting the sick and other unfortunates of the parish, her observations and experiences a valuable source for her later stories.

She took up writing, partly to offset the dreary village life of her surroundings, in the 1880s and published her first novel, ‘The Parish of Hilby’ (1883) at her own expense. It was well received by the critics.

Thus began a career that spanning three decades provided thirty-three novels, hundreds of short stories, and fourteen plays.  Her work was largely focused on rural life in Norfolk and centered on the fictional town of Dulditch, with grim but authentic accounts of poverty and deprivation.

Her marriage produced one boy and three girls. With her husband's death in 1913, she moved to Sheringham.

She is regarded as a major contributor to East Anglian literature with particular praise given to her short stories.

Mary E Mann died on 19th May 1929. She was 80. Her grave-marker is a carved open book with the epitaph ‘We bring our years to an end, as if it were a tale that is told’.

Life in ‘Ben Pitcher's Elly’ is degrading, awful and unvarnished. The chances of this young girl having a happy life are remote but her story must be heard.

John Keats was an English poet of the second generation of Romantic poets, with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. His poems were indifferently received in his lifetime, but his fame grew rapidly after his death. By the end of the century he was placed in the canon of English literature, strongly influencing many writers of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Keats had a style "heavily loaded with sensualities", notably in the series of odes. Typically of the Romantics, he accentuated extreme emotion through natural imagery. Today his poems and letters remain among the most popular and analysed in English literature – in particular "Ode to a Nightingale", "Ode on a Grecian Urn", "Sleep and Poetry" and the sonnet "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer". When Duane Abbajay took over his brother’s bankrupt nightclub in Toledo, Ohio in 1962, he promised his wife it would be a quick turnaround to bail his brother out and clear the family name. Instead, he became the face of a bar that transformed the city’s entertainment scene and inspired a Grammy-winning country song—all under the thumb of a trigger-happy mafia boss.
Informed by interviews with crime historians, employees, and patrons and corroborated by FBI and police reports, Dominic Vaiana and Stephanie Abbajay have crafted a Rust Belt psychodrama that offers a unique perspective into the worlds of organized crime and the music business, which were closely entwined.
Duane Abbajay, the 10th child of Syrian immigrants, went from having a Norman Rockwell-like all-American family life to owning and operating the most successful nightclub outside of Detroit and Chicago, all with the help of the mob, a secret he kept from his family.
A Bar in Toledo is a story of rock and roll, the Rust Belt, and redemption. It’s a story of the American Dream and the cost of success. Of a man who wanted it all, got it all, and the high price he paid to keep it.
Emotional, theatrical, and dripping with nostalgia, A Bar in Toledo is a love letter to the golden age of American music—and the dark underworld that helped make it all possible.
