  The Conquest of Byzantium

  The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception; Depending on one's perspective, it is viewed as evidence of imperial greatness or as a beacon of decay and demise. In historiography, the conquest of Constantinople is sometimes cited as one of the events that marked the transition from medieval Europe to modern times.

  Vijayanagara Empire - Hampi's...

  The Vijayanagara Empire emerged as one of the most significant and powerful dynasties in Indian history, rising at a time when the Indian subcontinent was fragmented and facing threats from expanding Islamic sultanates. Its foundation in the 14th century was a turning point that not only established a strong Hindu kingdom in southern India but also laid the groundwork for a cultural and economic renaissance. 
  The origins of Vijayanagara trace back to the political instability of the Deccan region. The Delhi Sultanate had extended its influence into the south, leading to the weakening of older Hindu kingdoms such as the Kakatiyas, Hoysalas, and Pandyas. Amid this turmoil, two brothers, Harihara and Bukka, originally serving under the Kakatiya rulers, rose to prominence. After being captured and later released by the Delhi Sultanate, they sought guidance from the sage Vidyaranya, who inspired them to establish a strong Hindu kingdom to resist further invasions. In 1336, they founded the city of Vijayanagara on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, marking the birth of the empire. 
  From its inception, the Vijayanagara Empire was strategically positioned to thrive. The Tungabhadra River provided a natural defensive barrier, while the rocky terrain of Hampi served as a formidable protection against enemy invasions. The early rulers focused on consolidating power, expanding their territories, and strengthening their military capabilities. Under Harihara I, the empire extended its control over parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, securing key trade routes and fortifying its defenses.

  Movies under the Influence charts the entangled histories of moviegoing and mind-altering substances from early cinema through the psychedelic 1970s. Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece examines how the parallel trajectories of these two aspects of American culture resulted in them being treated and regulated in similar ways. Rather than looking at drug use within film, she regards cinema and intoxicants as kindred experiences of immersion that have been subject to corresponding forces of ideology and power. 
   
   
   
  Szczepaniak-Gillece demonstrates how American movie theaters sought to cultivate a dual identity, presenting themselves as both a place of wholesome entertainment and a zone of illicit behavior. Movies under the Influence highlights the legislative, legal, and corporate powers that held sway over theaters, locating the convergence of moviegoing and drug use as a site of mediation and social control. 
   
   
   
  As much as substances and cinema are points where power intervenes, they are also settings of potential transcendence, and Movies under the Influence maintains this paradox as a necessary component of American film history. This book examines the relationship intoxicants suggest between mass media, spectatorship, and governmental regulation and provides a new angle from which to understand cinema's lasting role in evolving American culture.
