Sinossi

Manual Harvest Methods explores the often-overlooked world of pre-industrial agriculture, revealing how societies sustained themselves for millennia using hand tools, communal labor, and deep ecological knowledge. The book delves into the ingenuity required to develop harvesting techniques tailored to specific crops, climates, and terrains. For example, the design and use of tools like sickles and scythes impacted labor productivity and crop quality. It highlights the importance of understanding these historical methods for insights into sustainable agriculture and food security.

The book's unique value lies in its interdisciplinary approach, combining agricultural history, anthropology, and environmental science to challenge the assumption that mechanization is the only path to progress. It emphasizes the ecological dimensions of traditional harvesting, arguing that these practices were sophisticated systems that maximized yields while minimizing environmental impact.

The book progresses logically, first introducing the history of agriculture, then examining the tools of harvest, labor and community structures, and ecological understandings embedded within these practices.

Sirius, the Star of the Maltese Temples invites the reader to look at the megalithic temples of Malta in an entirely new way. The discovery of the temples’ orientation to Sirius explains with mathematical precision the slight shift in the direction of their axes, caused by the movement of the stars called the Precession of the Equinoxes. The resultant astronomical dating of the temples to the Mesolithic, the period immediately after the last Ice Age, is far older than mainstream archaeology maintains and is on a par with other megalithic sites elsewhere, including Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. These findings turn on its head our conception of the accomplishments of ancient people. Instead of being just primitive cave-dwellers, they were primeval astronomers, whose interest in the sky has left us a legacy we never dreamt existed.
From the Foreword by Giovanni Bonello: “This is a disturbing book. The author defines its contents as controversial and its conclusions as surprising. I judge it to be far, but far, more than that. It is disruptive of accepted wisdom and unsettles all we believe we knew of the origin of man in Malta, of the sequences of early civilization and the histories of prehistory – not in Malta alone, but throughout the whole of Europe. I started reading it in awe, at first with a deliberate effort at disbelief. By the time I was approaching the climax of the exposition, I ended as mesmerized as I was perplexed.”

Ultimately, while the institution of slavery existed, the principle of protecting individual property rights prevailed, alongside a necessary acknowledgment that slaves were property first and sentient human beings second. It also required a great deal of careful drafting and verbal contortions to construct the Constitution for the young republic that supported those principles of freedom and equality while at the same time facilitating the perpetuation of the “peculiar institution.”
It was not until 1865, with the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment, the instrument that abolished slavery, that any overt mention of slavery found its way into the Constitution. Before that, direct reference was always carefully avoided, although, at the same time, unmistakably alluded to. The document is filled with provisions specific to slavery, protecting and codifying it on a federal level, without anywhere making direct or overt mention of it. By 1788, when the Constitution of the United States was formally adopted, slavery had been a fact of life in the colonies for 169 years, since the first recorded arrival of black Africans in Virginia in 1619. At that time, around the institution, had evolved a system of laws that were derived in the main from English common law. The irony here is that the regime of English common law was at its root hostile to the principle of human bondage, had no tradition of slavery to call upon, and was desirous on the whole to avoid making any overt judgment or pronouncement on the matter. It, therefore, fell to colonial lawmakers to resolve that essential contradiction between treating Africans as either people or property or both. This tension remained in play throughout the era of slavery in English-speaking America until the matter was finally resolved by the outcome of the American Civil War.

Are we seeing history repeat itself?
An urgent, surprising and altogether persuasive read, Repeat: A Warning from History will open your eyes.
We live in an age that seems eerily familiar. A time of dictators, populists, organised lying, European wars, grabs for territory, ideological extremism and antisemitism. A time when things are falling apart and the centre is struggling to hold. The insurrection on the Capitol in January 2021 evoked chilling memories of the calamity of Hitler in the 1920s and 30s. The world needs to learn the lessons of these decades, and fast. Dennis Glover retells the story of the interwar years in a series of lessons drawn from unfolding events and the unheeded omens of those who spoke out but were ignored.

    Niccolò Machiavelli

The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli is one of the most influential works of political thought ever written. Composed in the early sixteenth century during the turbulent period of the Italian Renaissance, this groundbreaking treatise examines the nature of political power and offers practical advice on leadership, governance, and the realities of ruling a state.

Written as a guide for rulers, the book explores how a leader can gain power, maintain authority, and navigate the complex challenges of governing. Drawing on historical examples from ancient Rome, classical history, and contemporary Italian politics, Machiavelli analyzes the strategies used by successful rulers and the mistakes that have led others to downfall.

At the center of the work is Machiavelli's belief that political leadership requires a clear understanding of human nature, power, and circumstance. He argues that effective rulers must be prepared to act decisively, adapt to changing conditions, and sometimes make difficult or morally complex decisions in order to preserve stability and protect the state.

The book famously discusses the balance between virtù—the qualities of strength, skill, and determination in a ruler—and fortuna, the unpredictable forces of chance that influence political events. According to Machiavelli, a capable leader must learn to manage both, using intelligence and strategic judgment to shape outcomes whenever possible.

Throughout the text, Machiavelli examines different forms of political authority, including hereditary rule, newly acquired territories, and the role of military power in securing and defending a state. His observations emphasize the importance of discipline, strong institutions, and the loyalty of citizens and soldiers.

Although controversial for its candid discussion of political strategy, The Prince has become a foundational work in the study of political science and leadership. Its ideas have influenced generations of thinkers, statesmen, and scholars, sparking ongoing debate about ethics, power, and the responsibilities of leadership.

Clear, direct, and intellectually provocative, The Prince remains a timeless exploration of political realism, leadership, and the complex dynamics of power. More than five centuries after it was written, Machiavelli's insights continue to shape discussions about governance, strategy, and the nature of authority.
