Sinossi

"Hand To Hand" explores the fascinating connection between real-world martial arts and their dynamic portrayal in manga, offering readers a unique look into how Japanese comics create captivating fight scenes. The book reveals how manga artists draw inspiration from disciplines like Karate, Judo, Aikido, and Kendo to craft believable action sequences. One intriguing aspect is the blend of realistic combat techniques with stylistic exaggerations, amplifying the drama and energy of each panel. By understanding both the origins of martial arts techniques and the artistic choices made, readers gain a deeper appreciation for the craft behind manga's visual storytelling.

The book progresses through four key sections, starting with an introduction to the historical relationship between martial arts and manga. It then examines specific martial arts, analyzing their fundamental techniques and their adaptations in manga. Next, artistic techniques like panel layout and motion lines are explored, followed by a conclusion summarizing the findings and discussing the broader implications of this interdisciplinary approach. This combination of detailed martial arts analysis with artistic interpretation emphasizes how these techniques are transformed to create visual impact, making "Hand To Hand" a valuable resource for manga fans, martial arts enthusiasts, and aspiring artists alike.

On 27 December 1973 the nightmare began: late that night German businessman Thomas Niedermayer was kidnapped from his home in Belfast. Never seen alive again by his friends or family, he became one of the 'disappeared' and it seemed that no one knew what had happened to him.
His wife, Ingeborg, and his daughters, Renate and Gabriele, spent the next seven years not knowing if Thomas were alive or dead. In 1980, an IRA informant led police to recover his body. But the trauma for Thomas's family was far from over: there were further devastating consequences for all of them.
Five decades on, FACE DOWN sets out to discover what really happened in Belfast all those years ago.
Now in its second, updated edition and the subject of an IFTA nominated feature-length documentary, this astonishing story of one family's generational trauma undermines any attempt to glamorise or minimise the effects of political violence.

In an era where pop stars are more than performers, they are also brands, icons, and political actors. Celebrity, Image, and the New Politics of Pop offers a groundbreaking look into the cultural power of one of the most influential figures of our time: Ariana Grande.
Drawing on cultural criticism, media theory, and feminist analysis, this book examines how Grande has strategically crafted her image to navigate and challenge the evolving landscapes of celebrity, gender politics, and digital culture. From her early Nickelodeon days to her transformation into a global feminist symbol, Grande's rise is more than a success story; it's a case study in how pop stardom operates in the 21st century.
Whether she's using social media to bypass traditional media gatekeepers or reclaiming agency over her body and voice, Grande embodies a new kind of celebrity, one that blurs the lines between personal branding and political influence, performance and authenticity.
For readers fascinated by pop culture, media studies, feminism, or the artistry and ambition behind one of today's biggest stars, this book is an essential and eye-opening read.

Jerry Portnoy grew up in Chicago hearing the blues being played outside his father's rug store on famed Maxwell Street during the late 1940s and early '50s. After dropping out of college, he became immersed in the colorful world of pool hustlers as he managed the largest pool hall in Chicago. During a stint as a paratrooper early in the Vietnam war, he applied for discharge as a conscientious objector, and lived in San Francisco during 1967's "summer of love." While bumming around Europe the following year, Portnoy heard the blues again on a record by Sonny Boy Williamson and became obsessed with mastering blues harmonica. He returned to Chicago and in 1974 he was playing in small Black clubs at night when Muddy Waters plucked him from his day job at Cook County Jail to fill the harmonica chair in his fabled band. Eric Clapton followed suit in 1991. In a career that took him from ghetto taverns to the White House and the Royal Albert Hall, he went from the raggedy vans and cheap roadside motels of the blues world to the private jets and five-star hotels of the rock world. Between those two very different gigs was a struggle to survive the vagaries of the music business and the pressures of life on the road. In a remarkable life, he also assisted in surgery, lodged in a Moroccan house of ill repute, and dined at Giorgio Armani's.

    A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
    THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA COLLECTION

FROM THE MOVIE DIRECTED BY STANLEY KUBRICK

    CREATED BY FILM TRIVIA METAVERSE

    ABOUT THE FILM
A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian film directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's novel. Set in a near-future society, it follows Alex DeLarge, a sadistic delinquent who leads a gang of criminals. The film explores themes of violence, free will, and social control, as Alex and his gang engage in brutal acts of "ultraviolence." After being caught, Alex undergoes an experimental treatment to "rehabilitate" him, stripping away his ability to choose between good and evil. Kubrick uses stark visuals, classical music, and dark humor to critique authoritarianism, behavioral conditioning, and the loss of individuality.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“Malcolm McDowell's eyes were anesthetized for the torture scenes so that he could film for extended periods without excessive discomfort. Despite this, his corneas were repeatedly scratched by the metal lid locks.”

“Stanley Kubrick's first cut of the film, before editing by several assistants, was nearly four hours long.”

“The doctor overseeing Alex during the violent film scenes was a real doctor, ensuring that Malcolm McDowell’s eyes did not dry out during filming.”

“The sped-up sex scene in the movie was originally filmed as a continuous take that lasted 28 minutes. This was revealed by Malcolm McDowell on the 2007 DVD commentary track.”

“Stanley Kubrick had his assistant destroy all unused footage after shooting wrapped on the film.”
