Sinossi

In "The Trial of Émile Zola," the esteemed French novelist and naturalist offers a poignant examination of the infamous Dreyfus Affair, where a Jewish officer was wrongfully convicted of treason. Written in the context of late 19th-century France, Zola's eloquent prose and meticulous narrative style serve to engage the reader's moral sensibilities while exposing the perils of anti-Semitism, political corruption, and the failure of justice. Through a compelling combination of personal testimony and impassioned essays, this work reflects the broader sociopolitical upheavals of the era, illustrating how literature can be a vehicle for social change and humanity's conscience. Émile Zola, a leading figure of the literary movement known as Naturalism, was deeply influenced by his commitment to social justice and the struggles of the marginalized. Passionate about exposing societal injustices, Zola's involvement in the Dreyfus Affair not only stemmed from his own progressive beliefs but also highlighted his role as a writer willing to confront oppressive systems. His famous open letter "J'Accuse...!" propelled him into the realm of activism, prompting his trial and solidifying his status as a courageous advocate for truth. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, politics, and moral courage. Zola's fervent articulation of the struggle against injustice resonates powerfully today, making it a timeless reminder of the vital role that authors play in society. Rigorously researched and elegantly written, it offers profound insights into both the human condition and the complexities of a divided world.

This is another slice of murder, mystery and psychic phenomena in the Reverend Paltoquet series.
Just what happened to two young women who disappeared from the Sunnyside Guest House in Blackpool just after the First World War? Their fate has remained a mystery for many years, despite attempts by the husband of the first woman and the prospective husband of the second to find out.
In 1957, Reverend Bernard Paltoquet and his good friend Dr Robbie MacTavish turn up at the very same Blackpool guest house for a fortnight’s rest and recuperation. Their summer break, however, proves very far from restful or recuperative. Robbie is visited in the night by a ghostly bed companion, and another guest, young curate Oliver Johnson, sees a ghost bleed to death in front of his eyes. The scarred landlady of Sunnyside has a secret or two of her own, as well.
Professional medium, Anna Judge, who we first met in the previous novel in the series, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MIRROR, arrives to try and contact the ghosts. However, her powers are waning and it is only the Reverend Nigel Soames who can help. Soames is a colleague of Bernard’s and is staying at the Imperial Hotel in Blackpool at the same time as Bernard and Robbie are staying at the much less expensive Sunnyside. He is an obese and pompous man (described by Anna Judge irreverently as the ‘fat vicar’) who turns out to be the unlikely and very reluctant conduit for the restless spirits that haunt the Blackpool guest house.
Bernard and Robbie, meanwhile, try to enjoy their holiday, but Robbie is spooked by ghosts and Bernard is unsettled by the attentions of another guest at the Sunnyside, the charming and beautiful Celia Pargeter.

No one innocent. No one free. Nothing sacred.

After a decade of exile precipitated by the tragic death of his mother, Will Seems returns home from Richmond to rural Southside Virginia, taking a job as deputy sheriff in a landscape given way to crime and defeat. Impoverished and abandoned, this remote land of tobacco plantations, razed forests, and boardedup homes seems stuck in the past in a state that is trying to forget its complex history and move on.

Will’s efforts to go about his life are wrecked when a mysterious, brutal homicide claims the life of an old friend, Tom Janders, forcing Will to face the true impetus for his return: not to honor his mother’s memory, but to pay a debt to a Black friend who, in an act of selfless courage years ago, protected Will and suffered permanent disfigurement for it.

Meanwhile, a man Will knows to be innocent is arrested for Tom’s murder, and despite Will’s pleas, his boss seems all too content to wrap up the case. Will must weigh his personal guilt against his public duty when the local Black community hires Bennico Watts, an unpredictable private detective from Richmond, to help him find the real killer. It would seem an ideal pairing—she has experience, along with plenty of sand, and Will is privy to the details of the case—but it doesn’t takelong for either to realize they much prefer to operate alone.

Bennico and Will clash as they each defend their untraditional ways on a wild ride that wends deep into the Snakefoot, an underworld wilderness that for hundreds of years has functioned as a hideout for outcasts—the forgotten and neglected and abused—leaving us enmeshed in the tangled history of a region and its people that leaves no one innocent, no one free, nothing sacred.

“Set deep in the rural expanse of southern Virginia, it’s both a thriller and a dark fairy tale, filled with danger and menace, loss and longed-for redemption."—Megan Abbott
