Sinossi

North and South is a social novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, first serialized in 1854 in Household Words, a magazine edited by Charles Dickens, and published in book form in 1855. The novel contrasts the industrialized North of England with the more genteel, rural South, as seen through the experiences of the protagonist, Margaret Hale.

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865), also known as Mrs. Gaskell, was a prominent British novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is best known for her detailed portrayals of British society, particularly the struggles of the working class, women, and the impoverished. Gaskell's works often explore the intersection of social issues, class conflict, gender roles, and the effects of industrialization.

Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas' epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.
VOLUME 4: Two days after, a considerable crowd was assembled, towards ten o'clock in the morning, around the door of M. de Villefort's house, and a long file of mourning-coaches and private carriages extended along the Faubourg Saint-Honoré and the Rue de la Pépinière.

Part of the original Harvard Classics compendium series • One of TIME's 100 Best Mystery and Thriller Books of All Time
Crime and Punishment tells the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, an ex-student who plans to murder a pawnbroker to test his theory of personality. Having accomplished the deed, Raskolnikov struggles with mental anguish while trying to both avoid the consequences and hide his guilt from his friends and family.
Dostoevsky’s original idea for the novel centered on the Marmeladov family and the impact of alcoholism in Russia, but inspired by a double murder in France he decided to rework it around the new character of Raskolnikov. The novel was first serialized in The Russian Messenger over the course of 1866, where it was an instant success. It was published in a single volume in 1867.
This new and unabridged audiobook edition is based on Constance Garnett’s 1914 translation.
