Sinossi

North and South is one of Elizabeth Gaskell's best known novels. North and South is set in the fictional town of Milton in the North of England when industrialisation was changing the city. The novel has frequently been favourably compared to the similarly-focused Shirley by the better-known novelist and friend of Gaskell, Charlotte Brontë. Forced to leave her home in the tranquil rural south, Margaret Hale settles with her parents in the industrial town of Milton where she witnesses the harsh brutal world wrought by the industrial revolution and where employers and workers clash in the first organised strikes. Sympathetic to the poor whose courage and tenacity she admires and among whom she makes friends, she clashes with John Thornton, a cotton mill manufacturer who belongs to the nouveaux riches and whose contemptuous attitude to workers Margaret despises. The confrontation between her and Mr Thornton is reminiscent of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, but in the broad context of the harsh industrial North.

"Far From the Madding Crowd" is a novel written by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1874. The story is set in the rural English countryside and revolves around the life and romantic entanglements of Bathsheba Everdene, a headstrong and independent woman who inherits a farm. The novel explores themes of love, fate, and the complexities of relationships.

In the early part of the novel, Bathsheba Everdene inherits a farm called Weatherbury from her uncle. She is a beautiful and spirited young woman who attracts the attention of three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a humble and dependable shepherd; William Boldwood, a wealthy and reserved bachelor; and Sergeant Francis Troy, a dashing but reckless soldier. Bathsheba's choices and interactions with these men form the central focus of the story. Her decisions and the consequences of her actions drive the narrative forward and showcase the challenges and choices that women of the time faced in matters of love and marriage.

As the novel unfolds, Bathsheba's character undergoes significant development, and she grapples with her own emotions and the repercussions of her choices. "Far From the Madding Crowd" delves into the complexities of love and relationships, portraying the rural landscape and its inhabitants in vivid detail. Thomas Hardy's evocative prose and compelling characters make this novel a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers, exploring timeless themes of human nature and the rural life in 19th-century England.

    Christmas Carol - Carol loves...

I watched the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol again and it prompted me to write the first novel in this series. I love the story and have watched every version of it, but the 1951 version is my favourite. It was made long before most of us were born but it seems to capture the spirit of Charles Dickens’s book if you know what I mean. I hope Mr Dickens will forgive me for my spanking version.

In The Artificial Man (1929), pioneering science fiction author Clare Winger Harris explores the haunting boundary between flesh and machine, mind and soul.
When star athlete George Gregory loses his leg in an accident, despair consumes him. As his body continues to fail through subsequent tragedies, he turns to science—replacing his limbs and organs with mechanical ones, determined to prove that human identity can survive without the body. But as his transformation deepens, George’s obsession with artificial perfection drives him into isolation, madness, and murder.
Both a cautionary tale and a philosophical exploration of what makes us human, The Artificial Man stands as one of the earliest stories to feature a fully mechanized person—a precursor to modern cyberpunk and transhumanist fiction. Clare Winger Harris, one of the first female voices in science fiction, delivers a tale as visionary as it is tragic: the warning that progress, without compassion, can strip away the soul.
