Summary

Ruth by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell is a novel by an English novelist Elizabeth Gaskell, first published in three volumes in 1853.

Ruth is a young orphan girl working in a respectable sweatshop for the overworked Mrs Mason. She is selected to go to a ball to repair torn dresses. At the ball she meets the aristocratic Henry Bellingham, a rake figure who is instantly attracted to her. They meet again by chance and form a secret friendship; on an outing together they are spotted by Mrs Mason who, fearing for her shop's reputation, dismisses Ruth.
Alone in the world, Ruth is whisked away by Bellingham to London where it is implied she becomes a fallen woman.

They go on holiday to Wales together and there on a country walk Ruth meets the disabled and kind Mr Benson. Bellingham falls sick with fever and the hotel calls for his mother who arrives and is disgusted by her son's having lived in sin with Ruth. Bellingham is persuaded by his mother to abandon Ruth in Wales, leaving her some money.
A distraught Ruth attempts suicide but is spotted by Mr Benson who helps comfort her.

When he learns of her past and that she is alone he brings her back to his home town, where he is a Dissenting minister, to stay with him and his formidable but kind sister Faith. When they learn that Ruth is pregnant they decide to lie to the town and claim that she is a widow called Mrs Denbigh, to protect her from a society which would otherwise shun her.
Ruth has her baby, whom she names Leonard.

She is transformed into a Madonna type figure, calm and innocent once more. The rich local businessman Mr Bradshaw admires Ruth and employs her as a governess for his children, including his eldest daughter Jemima who is in awe of the beautiful Ruth.

“Please let me know when you would like to make the rejection official." Her words hit me like a ton of bricks and despite her acting like the words she just said were nothing important

"Would you like to do it now?" While my head screams yes, my heart burns begging me to say no. How can I go from never wanting my little mate to feeling so torn up at the idea of her leaving? I always assumed that I would meet her and reject her without a care but now that the reality of the situation is staring me right in the face I know that it won't be easy, not one bit.

Alpha Nicholas is 28, mateless, and has no interest in changing that. This year, it's his turn to host the annual Blue Moon Ball, and the last thing his wolf expects is to find his mate. Even more shocking is that his mate is 10 years younger—and he can’t ignore how his body reacts to her. He tries to fight the bond, but his world unravels when his guards capture two she-wolves running through his territory.

Bonnie has been broken by those closest to her, including her own twin sister. Together with her best friend Lilly, they plan to escape during the Blue Moon Ball, hosted by another pack. But when things go wrong, they’re left uncertain about their future.

A star quarterback with a legacy to uphold. A fiery activist with a past to avenge. The line between love and hate is about to snap.

Caelen "Cael" Holt has spent his life a pawn in his family’s game, a golden boy with a secret. He's a star quarterback with a cold exterior, and the only thing he craves is to escape. But his carefully constructed world is shattered when a campus protest pits him against the one person who sees right through his carefully crafted mask: Rhys Thorne.

Rhys Thorne is driven by a need for justice, fueled by a deep-seated anger at the company that ruined his family. He sees Cael as the physical embodiment of the corruption he despises. So when fate forces them into the same dorm room, their rivalry explodes into a war of words, turning their shared space into a tense battlefield.

But in the quiet hours after the shouting, something else begins to simmer beneath the surface—a raw, undeniable attraction that defies logic. As their feud becomes a public spectacle, Rhys and Cael are forced to choose between the roles they’ve always played and a partnership that could change everything.
