The true and extraordinary story of one of the last surviving women to have worked in codebreaking at both Bletchley Park and the Pentagon.
Born one hundred years ago, Betty Webb MBE, LOH (Legion of Honour) has had a ringside seat to history. After graduating from school, she faced the usual limited opportunities for employment on offer to women at the time. However, with the war in full swing, fate intervened and in 1941, wanting to play her part in the war effort, Betty joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (Women’s Army).
After being interviewed by an intelligence officer, she found herself at Euston station with her kit-bag, a travel warrant in her pocket and instructions to get off the train at Bletchley Park.
Between 1941 and 1945 Betty played a vital role in the top-secret efforts being made to decipher the secret communications of the Germans and later the Japanese. In 1945, as other members of the forces returned home from the war in Europe, she was sent to the Pentagon and was in Washington DC when the atomic bombs fell and when Eisenhower announced the end of the war.
Betty was unable to reveal the true nature of her work, even to her parents, until years later. In this fascinating book, she revisits the key moments of her life and recounts the incredible stories from her time at Bletchley Park.

She shares how she found strength in vulnerability, clarity in solitude, and peace in choosing herself—over and over again. Each chapter explores a different piece of the healing puzzle, from understanding emotional conditioning to navigating mental health, building resilience, and reclaiming your voice. Jaynette’s message is clear: your story matters, your voice is valid, and your life belongs to you. Written with honesty, compassion, and grit, ‘You Only Need Permission from Yourself’ is both a mirror and a guide for anyone ready to stop seeking outside validation and start living with intention. It’s not just a book. It’s a call to finally choose yourself—and mean it.

Published posthumously in December 1817, Persuasion was Jane Austen's final completed work before her death in July 1817. It has delighted readers ever since. It is a historical romance, which delves into themes of love, social class, and individual agency. It revolves around the life of Anne Elliot who was persuaded when she was 19 years old, to break off her engagement with Frederick Wentworth, a promising, though relatively poor young lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
Lonely and unloved by her father and older sister, and considered of little consequence by her married sister Mary, Anne leads a dull life. However, after the naval war ends, Frederick Wentworth returns to England having earned prestige and fortune. Seven years have now passed. But has Anne gained enough independence from her family and social circle to choose her own future? And do her ties to Captain Wentworth remain unbroken?
In this delightful audiobook, all 24 chapters are masterfully brought to life by seasoned vocal artist Stephanie Poppins. Her bright and energetic performance expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. And her attention to detail, her literary background, and her commitment to auditory excellence, make this a captivating listen.
This is the fourth audiobook in the Neworld Classics Collection.
    Published by Neworld Books Limited.
Soundtrack written and produced by Jean Miles Carter.
