Sinossi

Kalevala: The Epic Poem of Finland is a monumental work that serves as both a cultural cornerstone and a literary masterpiece, collecting and reimagining ancient Finnish oral traditions into a cohesive narrative. Elias Lönnrot employs a strikingly lyrical style, employing alliteration and repetition reflective of the oral tradition while weaving together tales of heroism, creation, and the struggles between shamanistic elements and Christian ideologies. The poem not only reflects the rich tapestry of Finnish folklore but also situates itself within the burgeoning nationalistic movements of the 19th century, championing Finnish identity at a time of cultural resurgence. Elias Lönnrot, a physician and philologist, dedicated much of his life to collecting folk songs and oral legends from diverse regions of Finland. His extensive travels across the Finnish countryside and meticulous documentation of these traditions became an integral part of his identity as a scholar. Lönnrot's own experiences with the clash of modernity and tradition deeply informed the themes of Kalevala, as he sought to preserve the vanishing folk culture and assert a sense of national pride amidst growing Russian influence. Kalevala is highly recommended for readers who wish to explore the foundations of Finnish literature and culture. Its vivid imagery and rich storytelling not only captivate the reader but also invite reflection on universal themes of struggle and resilience, making it a timeless work that resonates with audiences around the globe.

Inspired by the lyrical, mythic mode of Italian sports journalism from the 1930s to the 1950s, Viva Bartali! is a biography-in-verse of the iconic Italian cyclist Gino Bartali (1914—2000), two-time winner of the Tour de France (1938, 1948), known both as 'Gino the Pious' because of his fervent Catholic faith, and as Ginettaccio ('Gino the Terrible'), owing to the short shrift he so often gave the Press.
Conjuring Bartali at crux moments in his personal and professional career, through joy and tragedy, defeat and victory, the collection places us alongside the young rider proving his mettle and adding to his palmarès in the edgy atmosphere of Mussolini's Fascist Italy, whose political ideology he loathed. From amateur races to the professional one-day classics and on to Tour de France glory, Bartali is seen alongside his fellow riders as both vulnerable body and élite athlete; both cycling's hard man and fond and bereaved father; both kneeling believer and climbing god.
The collection gives us an insight into the complex relationship that underpinned his great rivalry with the campionissimo ('champion of champions') Fausto Coppi – the 'man of glass' against Bartali's 'man of iron'. It was a rivalry that a divided a nation and defined a sport. We are with Bartali at the 1948 Tour de France when he takes a phone call from the Italian prime minister, who asks him to do his part in diffusing a political crisis that could have tipped over into violence. And we witness his remarkable secret missions in the saddle as a courier throughout Tuscany during World War 2, carrying forged identity documents that helped save the lives of hundreds of Italian Jews. It was a deed he never spoke about – one for which he was named 'Righteous Among the Nations' by Yad Vashem in 2013.
"A fascinating, original take on the epic life and career of an Italian hero." John Foot, author of 'Pedalare! Pedalare!'
"Stylish and sophisticated, this poetic record of an extraordinary life confirms Damian Walford Davies' status as one of the finest poets writing in Wales today." Jem Poster

The Glugs of Gosh is a book of satirical verse written by Australian author C. J. Dennis, published by Angus & Robertson in 1917. The book's 13 poems are vignettes of life in a fictional kingdom called Gosh, inhabited by an arboreal race (that is to say, climbers) known as Glugs. Dennis describes the Glugs as a "stupid race of docile folk". Written in the style of children's nonsense poetry, the work attacks free trade, along with what Dennis saw as Australia's social conformity, intellectual cowardice and rampant bureaucracy. A shimmering exploration of love, longing, and the strange tenderness of modern life.
In her second collection, Ashley Obscura writes into the frequencies of a post-digital era—where desire, memory, embodiment, and signal constantly overlap. Ambient Technology traces the divide between what’s visible and what’s unspoken, the human heartbeat and the coded symbol. These poems reach toward the resilient interior of each of us, where intimacy endures and belonging reshapes itself.
