Synopsis

Madame Bovary takes place in provincial northern France, near the town of Rouen in Normandy. The story begins and ends with Charles Bovary, a stolid, kindhearted man without much ability or ambition. As the novel opens, Charles is a shy, oddly dressed teenager arriving at a new school amidst the ridicule of his new classmates.

Later, Charles struggles his way to a second-rate medical degree and becomes an officier de santé in the Public Health Service. His mother chooses a wife for him, an unpleasant but supposedly rich widow named Heloise Dubuc, and Charles sets out to build a practice in the village of Tostes (now Tôtes).

One day, Charles visits a local farm to set the owner's broken leg, and meets his client's daughter, Emma Rouault. Emma is a beautiful, daintily dressed young woman who has received a "good education" in a convent and who has a latent but powerful yearning for luxury and romance imbibed from the popular novels she has read. Charles is immediately attracted to her, and begins checking on his patient far more often than necessary until Heloise's jealousy puts a stop to the visits. When Heloise dies, Charles waits a decent interval, then begins courting Emma in earnest. Her father gives his consent, and Emma and Charles are married.

A daring, hilariously neurotic literary debut from the acclaimed actor and comedian Brett Gelman (Stranger Things, Fleabag).
Enter the wonderfully weird, always uncomfortable, side-splittingly funny world of The Terrifying Realm of the Possible, where your worst fears of who you are or might become are always just around the corner. In these masterful short stories from the singular mind of the actor and comedian Brett Gelman, you’ll meet five individuals, each navigating a uniquely strange stage of life:
    - ABRAHAM AMSTERDAM (the child)
    - MENDEL FREUDENBERGER (the teenager)
    - JACKIE COHEN (the adult)
    - IRIS BELOW (the senior)
    - Z (the dead)
Our characters face the big issues; the ones we all face. As they traverse the prickly terrain of morality, family, sex, fame, religion, and death they search for answers to life's unanswerable questions. In the futility of that search comes the absurdity, along with the comedy. The composite portrait is an existential (mis)adventure of Rothian proportions. Gelman's remarkable first book is a bold, unforgettable debut that challenges our assumptions about what it means to be human.

In Death Makes A Mistake, P. F. Costello delivers a witty, noir-tinged comedy of errors that follows the hapless Reggie Van Fiddler as he stumbles into a most unfortunate appointment—with Death himself. Reggie, a cocktail-loving bon vivant with a knack for bad timing, finds his leisurely day at the club disrupted by the unsettling presence of Mr. Demise, a small, impeccably dressed man claiming to be Death’s emissary.
What follows is a hilarious series of misadventures as Reggie, more annoyed than afraid, scrambles to outwit his unwanted visitor. But as it turns out, even Death can have an off day. Between bureaucratic blunders, misplaced assignment books, and one too many martinis, Mr. Demise proves himself less an ominous specter and more a bumbling rookie on his first job.
With a delightful mix of supernatural satire and detective pulp charm, Death Makes A Mistake is a fast-paced romp through life, death, and the perils of poor paperwork.
Perfect for fans of vintage noir comedies, Douglas Adams-style dark humor, and anyone who enjoys watching Death get flustered.
