  Ram Krishna Das Vaishnaba, or Dude Dehari Baba, or Milk Baba was so named because he lived forty-five years entirely on one small cup of milk per day. No other food ever passed his lips. Baba lived in a small room by the Bagmati river at Pashiputinath temple, five kilometers outside of Katmandu. His beautiful matted hair, or jata, was over twenty-six feet long. Baba was a lifelong devotee of Lord Rama and God Brother and confidant of Neem Karoli Baba, the iconic guru of Baba Ram Das. Lord Rama, also known as Ramachandra, is the seventh avatar of Krishna, one of his most popular incarnations along with Parshurama, and Gautama Buddha. Rama was born to Kaushalya and Dasharatha in Ayodhya, the ruler of the Kingdom of Kosala. Dude Baba was always chanting the name of Rama and was a master musician and great singer of bhajans. In 1993 he met American devotee author Jagannatha Dasa and subsequently travelled to his farm community in Lockport, New York for a six-month residency at the SRI ashram there. While there Dasa arranged for Baba to begin a mammoth two week recording session with a host of popular Indian musicians in order to get his collected bhajans down on tape for posterity. Recorded too were several inspirational lectures. Here then is the fruit of a lifetime spent as an ardent servant of Lord Rama and liberating transcendental vibrations of a pure devotee.

  General Douglas MacArthur and...

  Despite fighting in North Africa and the Atlantic, the United States still had the resources and manpower to fight the Japanese in the Pacific. Though the Japanese had crippled the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, its distance from Japan made an invasion of Pearl Harbor impossible, and Japan had not severely damaged important infrastructure. Thus, the United States was able to quickly rebuild a fleet, still stationed at Pearl Harbor right in the heart of the Pacific. This forward location allowed the United States to immediately push deeply into the Pacific theater. 
  The Americans would eventually push the Japanese back across the Pacific, and one of the most instrumental leaders in the effort was Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet and helped coordinate joint operations with the legendary General Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area. 
  Today, Nimitz’s name doesn’t ring as many bells as his counterpart’s, because of all the military men America produced during the 19th and 20th centuries, it’s hard to find one as important, successful, and controversial as General MacArthur. The son of a Civil War veteran, MacArthur rose to become the most instrumental commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His legendary return to the Philippines in 1944 made good on one of the war’s most famous vows, and it was MacArthur who fittingly oversaw the occupation and reconstruction of Japan following the war. 
  Given his long and celebrated career, MacArthur was the obvious choice to lead the newly created United Nations’ troops during the Korean War, but his arguments over war strategy and policy eventually led to his controversial firing by President Harry Truman in 1951. After that, in his own words, he “faded away,” living out his remaining days on the top floor of the Waldorf Hotel until his death in 1964.

  A new assessment of Jan Smuts’s military leadership through examination of his World War I campaigning, demonstrating that he was a gifted general, conversant with the craft of maneuver warfare, and a command style steeped in the experiences of his time as a Boer general.World War I ushered in a renewed scramble for Africa. At its helm, Jan Smuts grabbed the opportunity to realize his ambition of a Greater South Africa. He set his sights upon the vast German colonies of South-West Africa and East Africa – the demise of which would end the Kaiser’s grandiose schemes for Mittelafrika. As part of his strategy to shift South Africa’s borders inexorably northward, Smuts even cast an eye toward Portuguese and Belgian African possessions.  Smuts, his abilities as a general much denigrated by both his contemporary and then later modern historians, was no armchair soldier. This cabinet minister and statesman donned a uniform and led his men into battle. He learned his soldiery craft under General Koos De la Rey's tutelage, and another soldier-statesman, General Louis Botha during the South African War 1899–1902. He emerged from that war, immersed in the Boer maneuver doctrine he devastatingly waged in the guerrilla phase of that conflict. His daring and epic invasion of the Cape at the head of his commando remains legendary. The first phase of the German South West African campaign and the Afrikaner Rebellion in 1914 placed his abilities as a sound strategic thinker and a bold operational planner on display. Champing at the bit, he finally had the opportunity to command the Southern Forces in the second phase of the German South West African campaign.  Placed in command of the Allied forces in East Africa in 1916, he led a mixed bag of South Africans and Imperial troops against the legendary Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and his Shutztruppe. Using his penchant for Boer maneuver warfare together with mounted infantry led and manned by Boer Republican veterans, he proceeded to free the vast German territory from Lettow-Vorbeck’s grip. Often leading from the front, his operational concepts were an enigma to the British under his command, remaining so to modern-day historians. Although unable to bring the elusive and wily Lettow-Vorbeck to a final decisive battle, Smuts conquered most of the territory by the end of his tenure in February 1917.  General Jan Smuts and His First World War in Africa makes use of multiple archival sources and the official accounts of all the participants to provide a long-overdue reassessment of Smuts’s generalship and his role in furthering the strategic aims of South Africa and the British Empire in Africa during World War I.
