Summary

A teenager becomes a romantic hero in an artificial-reality school full of supernatural secrets in the first book of a slice-of-life, urban-fantasy series.

Leonard Dunning wakes up in a home he doesn't remember—and to a face in the mirror he doesn't recognize. He soon discovers he attends Blue Cherry High with his best friend, Josh Bernstein, who seems to be the most popular boy in school, with several girls competing for his attention. As the girls collide and clash over the oblivious Josh, Leo realizes each of them displays quirks of characters found in an anime harem comedy. So if Josh is the story's protagonist, what does that make Leo?

To learn more about the simulation in which he's been cast, Leo enlists the help of background extra Judy Sennoma. Together, they observe and catalog what's going on around them to try to figure out how the story will unfold. But as Leo interacts with Josh's love interests and inadvertently confronts stereotypical villains, he disrupts the flow of the narrative. Now, two girls have set their romantic sights on him, and he's made some very powerful enemies. As the designated secondary protagonist, Leo has become a hero in an adventure that's no longer following the tropes of the genre—and placed himself and his friends in grave danger.

Caught in the crosshairs, Leo must develop his newfound superhuman abilities before he gets dragged into the hidden conflicts between otherworldly factions. But he's not afraid to push back against the plot, and the narrative's shadowy controllers are in for a rude awakening.

The first volume of the hit slice-of-life romantic-comedy series—with more than two million views on Royal Road—now available on Audible and wherever ebooks are sold!

    Three full-length Urban Fantasy Romances
    Witch's Bounty:
One of three remaining demon assassin witches, Colleen is almost the last of her kind. Along with her familiar, a changeling spirit, she was hoping for a few months of quiet, running a small magicians' supply store in Fairbanks, Alaska. Peace isn't in the cards, though. Demons are raising hell in Seattle. She's on her way to kick some serious demon ass, when a Sidhe shows up and demands she accompany him to England to quell a demon uprising.
    Witch's Bane:
Demons strike in the midst of Colleen's wedding, and Roz launches desperate measures. As she shape-shifts to keep one step ahead of evil, it takes her mind off her other problems. Personal ones. She burned through a couple of marriages and hooked up with a string of loser men before, after, and in between. Though she wants to be happy for Colleen, the jealousy bug bit deep. In Roz's secret heart, she's attracted to Ronin, one of the Daoine Sidhe. He's so profanely beautiful she can barely breathe around him, but he's also headstrong and arrogant. Not good partner material-unless she wants to end up dusting her heart off one more time.
    Witches Rule:
Jenna's a special witch, sort of, when her magic works, which it often doesn't. Frustration about her limited power eats at her. It would be pathetic to get killed for lack of skills a teenager could master. Tristan is a Sidhe warrior. He fell hard for Jenna, but hasn't had an opportunity to act on the attraction beyond a few kisses. Kiernan is haunted by visions, particularly an apocalyptic sending that seems to be coming true. A confirmed bachelor, he doesn't understand his attraction to Jenna, but it's so strong he can't fight it. After a while, he doesn't even try, despite recognizing Tristan's claim to her. Startling truths surface about Jenna's magic, and then there's the problem that she's falling in love with two very different men.

A cat-like creature foils the plans of an evil alchemist in this comic fantasy by the author of The City of Dreaming Books. Malaisea, the unhealthiest town in the whole of Zamonia, is home to Echo the Crat, a multitalented creature resembling a cat in appearance but capable of speaking any language under the sun, human or animal. When his mistress dies, Echo finds himself out on the street. Dying of starvation, he is compelled to sign a contract with Ghoolion the Alchemaster, Malaisea’s evil alchemist-in-chief. This fateful document gives Ghoolion the right to kill Echo at the next full moon and render him down for his fat, with which he hopes to brew an alchemical concoction that will make him immortal. In return, he promises to regale the little Crat with the most exquisite gastronomic delicacies until his time is up. But Ghoolion has reckoned without Echo’s talent for survival and his ability to make new friends. Walter Moers’s magnificent translation of Optimus Yarnspinner’s novel introduces us to yet another of Zamonia’s hotbeds of adventure: Malaisea, a place where sick is healthy, up is down, right is wrong, and Ghoolion the Alchemaster reigns supreme—until Echo crosses his path.Praise for The Alchemaster’s Apprentice “Cheerfully insane. . . . Remains lively and inventive right through the final heroic battle between good and evil.” —New York Times Book Review “Moers’s creative mind is like J. K. Rowling’s on ecstasy; his book reads like a collision between The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the Brothers Grimm. . . . What a delightful book.” —Detroit News and Free Press “Relentlessly whimsical.” —Library Journal “Cross The Lord of the Rings with Yellow Submarine, throw in dashes of Monty Python, Douglas Adams, Shrek, and The Princess Bride . . . That’s the sort of alchemy in which this sprawling novel trades.” —Kirkus Reviews
