Sinopse

Cimarron is Edna Ferber's sweeping novel of the American frontier and the making of modern society. Set during the Oklahoma land rush and its aftermath, the novel follows the Cravat family as they navigate ambition, displacement, and moral compromise in a rapidly changing territory where law, ownership, and identity are still being defined.

At the center of the novel is the tension between idealism and reality. Public progress—new towns, newspapers, courts, and businesses—emerges alongside private failures, broken relationships, and unacknowledged injustice. Ferber presents the frontier not as myth, but as a social experiment shaped by power, exclusion, and endurance.

Broad in scope yet attentive to personal cost, Cimarron examines how nations are formed through both vision and violence. Clear-eyed and unsentimental, the novel remains a foundational work of American historical fiction, capturing the construction of order out of expansion and uncertainty.

LONGLISTED FOR THE MILES FRANKLIN AWARD

From the acclaimed author of the Miles Franklin longlisted Madukka: The River Serpent (UWA) and the Barbara Jefferis Award shortlisted Benevolence, Compassion continues Julie Janson’s emotional and intense literary exploration of the complex and dangerous lives of Aboriginal women during the 1800s in colonial New South Wales, which she began in Benevolence as a counter narrative to colonial history in Australian literature.

Compassion is the dramatised life story of one of Julie Janson’s ancestors who went on trial for stealing livestock in New South Wales, and it is an exciting and violent story of anti-colonial revenge and roaming adventure. A gripping fictive account of Aboriginal life in the 1800s, Compassion follows the life of Duringah, AKA Nell James, the outlaw daughter of the Darug hero of Benevolence, Muraging.

The vengeful spirit of an unborn child draws her father from the Bight of Biafra onto a slave ship bound for the harshly colonized Caribbean island of Dominica in this lush historical novel infused with magical realism and rooted in West African mythology for readers of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Water Dancer and River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer.

Etta is an ogbanje, an unborn soul trapped in a cycle of conception and death in the wombs of one family. A gifted siren in the twelfth house of the zodiac—the house of secrets, of dreams, and of death—her voice unleashes ethereal songs that consume listeners with fear. Her desperate desire to live compels her father, Bako, into the hands of his captors of the coast of 18th-century Benin and carries him on a harrowing journey across the Atlantic to enslavement on a sugarcane plantation in Dominica.

Bako’s defiant spirit—and Etta’s fervent wish to be born—soon lead him to escape into the mountains. There, he has a fateful encounter with the Kalinaga woman named Mary who will ensure Etta’s birth into the mortal world. But the child Etta bears physical scars of her many spiritual deaths, bringing her father to suspect the truth of his daughter’s origins. As the landowners and tradesmen who enslave Etta’s people feel her wrath and inflame rebellion, Bako fears it is the rebellion within which is the gravest.

""A charming fantasy...Leda Cassidy is something else. An unusual mix of myths and legends from around the world, this feels like a classic-in-waiting."" —The Guardian
A Scottish governess arrives in Singapore to take up her new post, only to find a host of problems await that require her very unique skills in this award-winning and incredibly entertaining historical fantasy novel.
There has never yet been a crisis that Miss Leda Cassidy hasn’t been able to fix, be it a lovelorn young charge, perpetually distracted students, or an unruly and malevolent ghost. When she arrives at her new employer’s home and discovers the family is being terrorized by a vampiric spirit, she sets about righting the situation without delay.
But it seems that as soon as she puts one supernatural creature to rest, another appears to take its place. A woman’s work is truly never done, is it?
When she meets Mr. Kay, a widower whose greatest worry appears to be making matches for his twin daughters, she is happy to take a post that might provide her a bit of respite from her more “spirited” friends. But she soon realizes that the Kays are in far more trouble than she realized—and that her presence in their home might have put the family she’s grown to cherish in even more jeopardy. Will she be able to save them all before it’s too late, or has she finally stumbled upon the one problem she isn’t able to solve?
