Sinossi

“A splendid army almost demoralized, millions of public property given up or destroyed, thousands of lives of our best men sacrificed for no purpose. I dare not trust myself to speak of this commander as I feel and believe. Suffice to say...that more insolence, superciliousness, ignorance, and pretentiousness were never combined in one man.” – Union II Corps Commander Alpheus Williams

The Second Battle of Bull Run (August 28-30, 1862) was one of the most decisive battles fought during the Civil War, and it was also one of the most unlikely. Less than three months before the battle, Joseph E. Johnston’s Army of Northern Virginia had been pushed back nearly all the way to Richmond by George B. McClellan’s Army of the Potomac, so close that Union soldiers could see the church steeples of the Confederate capital. And yet, at the end of Second Manassas, Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia found itself in the field unopposed about 20 miles away from the Union capital of Washington D.C. How could such a remarkable reversal of fortunes take place so quickly?

After Lee succeeded the wounded Johnston, he pushed McClellan’s Army of the Potomac away from Richmond and back up the Peninsula in late June, only to then swing his army north to face a second Union army, John Pope’s Army of Virginia. Needing to strike out before the Army of the Potomac successfully sailed back to Washington and linked up with Pope’s army, Lee daringly split his army to threaten Pope’s supply lines, forcing Pope to fall back to Manassas to protect his flank and maintain his lines of communication. At the same time, it left half of Lee’s army (under Stonewall Jackson) potentially exposed against the larger Union army until the other wing (under James Longstreet) linked back up. Thus, in late August 1862, the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Virginia found themselves fighting over nearly the exact same land the South and North fought over in the First Battle of Bull Run 13 months earlier.

When Pope’s army fell back to Manassas to confront Jackson, his wing of Lee’s army dug in along a railroad trench and took a defensive stance. The battle began with the Union army throwing itself at Jackson the first two days. But the concentration on Stonewall’s men opened up the Union army’s left flank for Longstreet’s wing, which marched 30 miles in 24 hours to reach the battlefield by the late afternoon of August 29. Lee used Longstreet’s wing on August 30 to deliver a devastating flank attack before enough reinforcements from the retreating Army of the Potomac reached the field, sweeping Pope’s Army from Manassas and forcing the Union soldiers into yet another disorderly retreat from Manassas to Washington D.C., a scene eerily reminiscent of the First Battle of Bull Run.

The Greatest Civil War Battles: The Second Battle of Bull Run comprehensively covers the campaign and the events that led up to the battle, the fighting itself, and the aftermath of the battle. Accounts of the battle by important participants are also included, along with maps of the battle and pictures of important people, places, and events. You will learn about the Second Battle of Bull Run like you never have before, in no time at all.

The gripping story of a group of female adventurers and their treacherous pioneering ascent of Denali in 1970

Cassidy Randall draws on extensive archival research and original interviews to tell an engrossing, edge-of-the-seat adventure story about a forgotten group of climbers who had the audacity to believe that women could walk alone in extraordinary and treacherous heights.

Grace Hoeman dreamed of standing on top of Denali. The tallest peak in North America, the fierce polar mountain loomed large in many climbers’ imaginations, and Grace, a doctor in Alaska, had come close to the top, only to be turned back by altitude sickness and a storm that took the lives of seven fellow climbers in one remorseless blow.

Other expeditions denied her a place because of her gender, and when a letter arrived from a climber in California named Arlene Blum, who’d also been barred from expeditions—unless she stayed in base camp and cooked for the men, Grace got a defiant idea: she would organize and lead the first-ever all-female ascent of the frozen Alaskan peak.

Everyone told the “Denali Damsels,” as the team called themselves, that it couldn’t be done: Women were incapable of climbing mountains on their own. Men had walked on the moon; women still had not stood on the highest points on Earth. But these six women were unwilling to be limited by sexists and misogynists. They pushed past barriers in society at large, the climbing world, and their own bodies.

And then, when disaster struck at the worst time on their expedition, they could either keep their wits and prove their mettle, or die and confirm the worst opinions of men.

“Thirty Below is fast paced, with incredible characters who make you appreciate how far mountaineering (and society in general) has progressed in the last fifty years and exciting all the way to the end. This is a gripping story that's worth telling, and Randall has done a great job in bringing it to life.”—Alex Honnold, professional climber and author of Alone on the Wall

Is it possible to stay hopeful - and to keep a sense of humor - while your deepest desire is threatened? When you're falsely accused? When people you trust advise you to hide your heritage?
Melanie Herz Promecene, who faced each of those challenges while trying to adopt a child, is walking proof that the answer is yes.
In this staggeringly honest, often hilarious, always hopeful memoir, Promecene takes readers with her through the terror of 9/11 in New York, the floods of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, the winding streets of Beijing, and a beautiful day in Florence. And, of course, readers join her as she overcomes seemingly impossible obstacles of bureaucracy and biology.
Her account of heartbreaking decisions, innocent misunderstandings that threaten to have devastating results, and the quirks and joy of her own large family are compelling and ultimately heartwarming.
Along the way, she realizes that she and her husband aren't choosing their son: He is choosing them. You'll never look at rainbows the same way.

All our lives, we've been fed watered-down versions of the classic myths. In reality, mythology is more screwed up than a schizophrenic shaman doing hits of unidentified . . . wait, it all makes sense now. In Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes, Cory O'Brien, creator of Myths RETOLD!, sets the stories straight. These are rude, crude, totally sacred texts told the way they were meant to be told.

Here are a few more gems to consider: Zeus once stuffed an unborn fetus inside his thigh to save its life after he exploded its mother by being too good in bed; the Egyptian universe was saved because Sekhmet got too hammered to keep murdering everyone; the Hindu universe is run by a married couple who only stop murdering in order to throw dance parties on the corpses of their enemies; the Norse goddess Freyja once consented to a four-dwarf gangbang in exchange; and there's more dysfunctional goodness where that came from.

“In this short story, you will see the tender heart of love and careful words of instruction of Mother. The law of kindness is on Mother’s tongue. She demonstrates watchful protection over Cammy and Sammy as she daily is in their presence. Parents can easily relate the mother’s heart, akin to the heart of Jesus as He is to His children. A wonderful and useful book. Had I had this book when my children were small, I certainly would have made use of it. I highly recommend this for all ages!” Patti Roberts- married homeschooling mother of seven with growing number of grand babies.“Mara-lee has given us a tremendous gift. Christians throughout history have systematically taught the faith to their children. This practice of systematic training in a catechism has become largely neglected by the Church in the last generation. Mara-lee’s hope is to bridge the gap between the old ways of training our kids up in solid doctrine, allowing them to wrestle with the deep things of God, and modern children’s story telling. I hope many find her work to be a blessing to the spiritual life of their children and a warm treasure in their home during the intimate times as the family gathers.” Pastor Jeff Durbin- married father of four, sought after for his debate skills and also the main host of ApologiaRadio.com“Mara-lee has peeked into a child’s inquiring mind and has given solid answers to questions about how to hear and respond to God’s voice. Children will love the way Cammy’s Adventures introduces them to new experiences in their lives. This delightful book will be a great tool for opening up discussions both at home and in the classroom.” Donna Lapp- married mother of 3, grandmother of 13 and great grandmother of 10. She is also a retired elementary grade school teacher.
